New and developing industries always pay less. They do not have the profit margins to be able to afford to pay more- unless they require highly skilled labor which is in short supply then they have to to be able to attract them. Nothing surprising there.

I think demand for them has probably slowed- for two reasons. One the recession- less extra money for things like that. Second, lower costs for other energy sources. Oil and gas are half what they were just last summer. The cost of the systems compared to the savings on your bill are just not there right now. You will still find people willing to put money say into a solar system- not necessarily for the financial returm but because they want to do the "right thing" for the environment.
