there was a time when Canon had much better autofocus speeds which is a high priority for shooting sports. it was about this one technical aspect more than anything. nowadays, nikon has caught up to the point where, for an amateur like you and me, the whole discussion of canon vs. nikon (from a technical perspective) is pointless. The reason there are still more canons on the sidelines of sports events is more likely due to the "momentum" that exists by owning many expensive lenses which are not compatible with other brands.

in the end, my opinion is that, if you have to ask which is better, canon vs. nikon, most likely, either will be good enough for you. if the nature of your work is so important and sensitive that these negligible technical differences matter, you probably shouldn't be looking at mainstream consumer brands like canon or nikon in the first place.
