Easy fix, becoming BIG problem
Hey all.
My step brothers Compaq 7478 desktop was acting up and he asked me to fix it. He had picked up a virus and wasnt sure what else was wrong with it. (Apparently the computer would freeze, lock up, would go into different programs, losing data, and all around just giving him problems. So I attempted to diagnose it and didnt really see anything wrong with it. I told him that it appeared fine, but he was adamant that it was screwed up. So I told him that I could just leave it alone or I could just reformat it and reinstall everything for him. He asked me to just start his computer from scratch...simple enough right.
Well Compaq has its Quick Restore discs, which I figured would be the quick and easy way to restore his computer to what it was when he got it. I would then go through and reconfigure it as he would want it. So I went through and did that and it seemed to be fine. SO I went through to get Win98SE's options installed, but it keeps freezing up at 36% (just the install not the computer). Since it was running off of the HD, I figured I would use my actual Win98 disc. Unfortunately, every time I go to do this, the computer isnt finding any files on it. It can find the drive, but when I have it just go under the Win98, so it would scan the whole disc for the correct file, it just is blank.
So after this, I got pretty annoyed. I dont particularly like compaq's so I figured I would do it the old fashioned way. I just reformatted the drive and installed win98 from scratch. This seemed to be fine until I started installing all the drivers.
I started getting the following errors:
vnsetup.vxd
vredir.vxd
DFS.vxd
Finally it went into Win98 and the following error came up.
msnp32.dll not found
The only thing that wasnt working was the modem, but other than that everything seemed fine.
However, when I went into the add/remove programs and under Win98 options I was able to get the first error line to disappear. However, there was nothing that I could do that would get the modem to work and fix the problems.
I decided to try the compaq quick restore again because I figured the errors were the result of the screwy nature of a compaq computer. Now the errors are gone, but I still cant get the options to install. I havent gotten to try the modem yet.
So anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this monstrosity.
