Pretty much that's the best thing to do. Generally you will see shorter battery life over time (rather than find out one day your unit won't charge at all). Once this happens, you might as well buy another battery.
For $35, that's not too bad of a deal (considering Apple wants to charge $100 for its replacement iPod battery).
Everyone I talk to is recommending the iRiver, and I think I'm going to listen to them when I buy another HD-based player.
(That, and I'm extremely happy with my iRiver SlimX 350 -- even though my remote is toast).
