Ugh. Trying to dl the opensuse 10.1 DVD and it's going to take a day or so on my 768k down. Bluh.

Someone want to sponser me getting a T1 connection? Or howzabout FiOS (damn, not available in my area yet)

T1 isn't too much faster. I bet you're praying for that MD5 to check out once you have it all. If I were you I'd go to somewhere with a fast connection and download it to a portable drive (ipod?)

verizon is ass... i can't believe that can get away with that crappy bandwidth...

i had twice that with SBC up north and it was the same price.

i don't like verizon at all...

My ATT (formerly SBC Global) is like 3 MB down and 768 up... plenty fast for most downloads. :D

Ouch, that's slow. We have nearly 5Mbit down here, but less than 384 up.

yeah. i wish FiOS was available for me. then i wouldn't need a freakin phoneline for verizon DSL.

kimchi - hold out hope. Just found out today that VZW's having meetings in June with Arlington County to discuss running cable TV over the fiber they're laying down here. Presumably, they'd have more of a reason to lay down fiber in more places if they could sell TV too.

Looking forward to the day I won't be a Comcast customer.

They are laying the lines near me for it. Also, some of my co-workers that live near Columbia, MD just got it.

:agree:
I have the same.
Apparently they also offer 6meg down now; don't remember the up spd though. (It's like $32/mo for 1st yr for new customers; DSL Pro which is what me + DF have is $18/mo 1st yr new customers (I pay $36/mo 'cause I've had it for almost 2 yrs now and that was the price when I signed up).

You do realize that you can "renegotiate" your contract and get the new rate don'tcha?

I now pay $17.99 for this version of ATT... with a new contract. All you need to do is call and tell them that you want the new rate (especially if your former contract is already over... which at 2 years, I'd think that it was.)

Before you complain too much, just remember there are still people like me who's only option for access at home is dialup at 46k. (Don't bother suggesting satellite. The upfront costs are huge, and the general concensus is that it sucks.)

At least I have friends with bad phone lines who can only get a 28k connection.

/me would die if all I had was dial-up.... just fall over :dead:

It's ok, but I'm not quite sure for what you're apologizing, except maybe for copying my PS style? :) I have Cox Cable internet service, which is pretty fast, but I forget how fast it actually is.

I agree Comcast is good enough.

I agree Comcast is good enough.
It should be... Double the speed of ATT, but at nearly triple the cost.

Comcast 6 Mbit basic here ($29.99 for the first 3 months then jumps up to $54.99 for the rest of your contract)

ATT (formerly SBC) DSL ( 3 MBit plan is $17.99 per month for one year)

Honestly, I like having a little more cash in my pocket versus the extra speed in this case... Maybe if they would just make it $29.99 flat for the whole contract, then it MIGHT be worth it.

Comcast out here blows. We can't get FiOS because they don't deploy in "multi-dwelling buildings" (condos), which is complete crap.

I got so damn tired of the service loss, overbilling, accussations and wholly incompetent tech support (the day I cancelled, I literally said "I WILL NOT RESTART MY ****ING COMPUTER, HOW ABOUT YOU RESTART YOUR ****ING DNS SERVERS YOU DICKLESS PIECE OF ****"... ahem... needless to say it was Verizon DSL from that point on.

Re: FIOS & MDB, this should cheer you up: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1035_22-6047589.html

Verizon's Arlington office is directly across the street from my apt, I'm hoping our building is a test case.

Heh...nice shirt. I expect to see a bum walking with a cardboard sign saying something like that around Lee Circle one of these days. :)

Btw, hapoo, what pic is in your sig? I've been staring at it for days, and I'm usually pretty good at those "magic images" or whatever.

The images are usually larger - the first few times I looked at it my eyes went too far out of focus; you've got to unfocus them so the little repeating blue patches you can kind of make out overlap, but no more.

It helped me to save the image and enlarge it a bit in Irfanview.

Why not pick a technology that can burst above the quoted speed?....that rules out DSL.

I have since quit that job and started my own business. We're still broadbandless. Every broadband provider I contact tells me we're about two to three miles too far out.

around here it can't. SBC won't let it from what I understood.

I'm having a tough time finding any information for or against what I stated about DSLs ability to burst. I know T1s and Frame connections can burst, and I thought Cable could.

Well, I can tell you, I've seen DSL burst. It's usually at the begining of a download but it can be a pretty impressive incredible hulk type thing when it happens.

Ended up calling SBC and having them re-contract me so now I'm getting the Pro for the promo price ($17/mo).

FYI (dunno about everywhere else) where I live now we can get 6 meg SBC DSL...I forget what its called (DSL Expert? or something). It's $36/mo for 1 yr on promo right now. I thought about upgrading to it but...I don't use the computer at home enough for downloading to accept the cost (although it's still cheaper than a cable line)
