Wednesday night: when I went to bed, I was aware of a slight discomfort in one tooth - nothing to be concerned about.

Thursday morning: 1.5 hours before I want to wake up, I wake up and am aware of an aching tooth that won't let me sleep. Took some ibuprofen to see it it would help. Called dentist's office (a personal friend - office phone rings at his home) and he said to call his office at 9:30 to see when I could get in. Tooth still hurting. Took an Aleve and went to work.

Thursday 9:30am - called dentist's office (already had several emergencies in the works) and set up a 2:30 appointment. Tooth still aching. Accidentally bit down on that side and the pain had me climbing the wall. :censored: Almost feeling nauseous. Took some Acetaminophen.

Thursday 11:30am - get a call from dentist's office - had a 1:00pm cancellation and wondered if I could make it. I take it.

Thursday 1:00pm - dentist takes xray and says that I have won an all-insurance paid root canal (my version of his assessment). Numbs me up, drills through the gold crown, reams out the tooth, patches it up. (Incidentally, my dentist uses a digital xray that give instantaneous images - very nice for quick check of how deep in the root he has gone.)

Thursday 2:30pm - I'm on my way home. Tooth starting to ache as anesthetic wears off.

Thursday 5:30pm - sit down to supper (I had skipped lunch) and on first bite accidentally bite down on problem side. Pain had me climbing the wall. :mad2: Didn't chew my food very well during rest of meal.

Thursday 11:00pm - tooth still hurting as I went to bed. Took an Aleve. Missed out on the Woot Bag of Crap.

Friday 7:00am - at least the tooth only hurts when I bite down. Went to work.

Friday now - pain almost gone when I bite down. I'll probably be able to enjoy my dinner tonight.

Ouch! That does suck. My mom has had several root canals but I've never had one. Thank goodness. heh

He didn't give you any real pain meds to take after that procedure? Geez...that's gotta hurt.

H <---hasn't been to a dentist in a few years, though I get 2 free checkups/year with my current dental insurance, which I've never used, wasting money

it's fortunate that we have the means to alleviate/fix the pain/problem ... i can only imagine what people went through back in the days ... let's say 500 to 1000 years ago ...

Yeah, the experience brought to mind a scene from Cast Away involving an ice skate and a rock.

People way back when ate less sugary stuff and thus had pretty good dental hygiene.

Heh...I do brush 2-3 times/day, and I do floss ~2-3 times/week, and I have no pain or anything right now. Yeah, I know I need to schedule a cleaning.

H <----ducks and tries to hide from nickel...

Sorry for the pain. My last visit I needed root canals but couldn't afford it as I had already used up my insurance. Oh, and I hate canker sores. I just had one.

G1984, if your near the border, I hear dental work is very cheap in Mexico because of insurance differences. It may even be cheaper than your copay if your insurance covered it.

What's BMT (besides a Subway itallian sandwich)?

hehe.... what? you didn't have 2 kidneys when you came in here... I believe that's an urban legend (http://www.snopes.com/horrors/robbery/kidney.asp) but yeah, as always (anywhere), you definitely want to go by word of mouth and try and find a reputable dentist.

Yep, urban legend. It popped up here in the late 90's, but, while somewhat possible, it would be EXTREMELY rare for someone to survive such an ordeal. And sitting in ice would be kind of stupid anyway. Also, the "drug" slipped into the drink would hardly make anyone immune from pain, though it might induce amnesia. You'd have to have a full crew - anesthesia with proper equipment, sterile conditions (in a motel room? Please.) and many other things in place to make it work right. It just doesn't happen. I've seen stranger things IRL, but this particular one is a hoax.

How did we get from a root canal to stolen kidneys? :heh:

By the way, the only "pills" I got from the dentist were antibiotics to guard against an infection getting started.

Hah! Happens that way sometimes. Gotta watch out for those malicious kidney-lovin' dentists!

By the way, the only "pills" I got from the dentist were antibiotics to guard against an infection getting started.

That's good. When I had my wisdom teeth removed about 13 years ago, I got no antibiotics. I don't think it would have mattered, but I didn't get any antiinflammatories either, just some tylenol/oxycodone. So my face blew up to about twice its usual size (it looked like my face was attached to my head by my eyebrows and my chin), I couldn't brush for a couple of days (and couldn't stand my own breath) and I was a little gorked from the oxycodone.

Nowdays it's getting more accepted to give antibiotics for even small dental procedures, including cleanings, as many people have heart conditions that predispose them to getting bugs growing on their valves, etc., without them. When you get your teeth cleaned, the bacteria level in your blood skyrockets.

I had a root canal a few months ago-actually NOT as bad as all the hype. Good numbing first then a lot of wierd tools in the mouth.
