After years of development and several postponements, Microsoft on Wednesday opened Windows Vista to public beta testing.

Wednesday afternoon, Microsoft made available English-, German-, and Japanese-language versions of Vista, each in either 32- or 64-bit editions, for downloading. The files, which are in .iso format, are extremely large: the English language, 32-bit version, for example, weighed in at 3.13GB.

Once downloaded, the file must be burned to a DVD. Users not equipped with a DVD-RW drive can order a physical disc for a small fee; U.S. users, for instance, will pay $6 for the disc, plus another $4 shipping and handling.

Product registration keys, which are required to install Vista from the DVD, will be e-mailed to those who download Beta 2 -- officially called the Customer Preview Program (CPP) -- and included with discs mailed to users.

To help users manage the download -- particularly to pick it up if the connection's lost -- Microsoft's partnered with Akamai Technologies, which provided a download management utility. Internet Explorer users download the manager as an ActiveX control; users of other browsers, such as Mozilla's Firefox, are provided a Java version of the utility.

The starting point for downloads or ordering is this page on the Vista Web site.

Ehh, will probably d/l it overnight and burn/install tomorrow. We have some partnerships with M/S and our Marketing Director is chomping at the bit to give Vista a shot.

Thanks for the link!

Vista is so disgustingly ugly it's a joke. Microsoft had all this time to make an OS that was visually appealing and compete with OSX and failed. The artwork is SO cheesy.

Yeah, I did it with Beta 2 a couple of weeks ago. Actually went very smooth. I installed in on a partition that was on the same hard drive as my XP installation. It installed its own boot loader, and I can now dual boot.

Dual booting is fine...just don't try to delete the Vista partition and fix the boot loader. :)

I dual booted the CTP I had back in March with XP Pro and when I tried to get rid of Vista (by deleting the partition), I had uber problems with the boot manager and couldn't repair it and ended having to reformat/reinstall XP Pro all over again.

Vista...meh...it was really apppealing a year ago, slightly appealing a few months ago, and now...it's just...meh...to me. XP Pro is solid, just like 2k was before it; this whole "gloss coat/new GUI" Vista madness is sorta not really swaying me to upgrade. Granted, I know there's new stuff, but a lot of it at this stage in the game is more trouble than its worth. Last I heard (from Paul Thurrott's WinSupersite) the authentication feature is still flawed and annoying (as opposed to *nix or OSX), and that was one of the main things that interested me in Vista. You've also got to consider the ridiculous hardware requirements, and the (given) added DRM, and well...the picture isn't so pretty anymore.

CRAP! :) How about if you try to fix the boot loader first and then delete the partition?

Maybe they fixed this problem in this new beta (or a CTP build after mine), but I don't think it'd work if you tried to fix it while the OS/partition was still installed because it'll still detect it and leave it as an option.

I'd say if you delete Vista, try the /fix mbr command from the recovery console, and if that doesn't work, try to boot into XP using the boot menu and then go into the Startup tab under the computer properties and see if you can edit out the Vista mbr record from there.

Again though - hopefully they fixed this. (Or maybe it was just a problem I had 'cause I did something wrong and I'm an idiot. :heh:)
