What is the best video editing software?

I have a sony digital video camera with a 1394 connection, a fast computer (800 mhz) and a reasonably large hard drive (40 gigs.) My computer came with some crappy (free) editing software that I wish to replace. What software would you recommend? Thanks for any help!

well, my brother is in the business of video editing (weddings etc.) and he uses Adobe Premiere, but if they had the money he says he would get Final Cut Pro. - supposed to be the best.

Oh, BTW, use a Raid for you swap/storage drive if you don't want stuttering video playback.
