I just bought this mobo @ computergeeks.com for $59.

I have not yet purchased a cpu. Is this mobo for athlon classics only? it's a Via kx-133 chipset. I really wanted to use a tbird.
Yes this motherboard is for the athlon classic. Thunderbird athlons come in a socket form.

You sure? Pricewatch has Slot A tbirds showing. And Leon has a Slot A Tbird for sale in the forums.
Not every AMD motherboard that uses a KX-133 chipset is compatible with the Thunderbird.
Take a look at what Leon said about T-Birds and KX-133 in that thread:
http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=11707
"The T-bird doesn't seem to like the VIA KX-133 chipset. You would be safer with a KT-133 (i think) chipset. And the heatsink/fan is for an Unmodified chip. ACK! I forgot to mention that the CPU is a Slot-A, no socket form."
This is what happened. The original plan of AMD was that the Thunderbird would be produced in the socket forum only. The motherboard manufacturers pressured AMD to make Slot-A T-Birds. Otherwise there would be Slot-A KX133 motherboards piled up in the warehouses. Piled up Slot-A KX-133 motherboards in warehouse mean unhappy motherboard manufacturers. Unhappy motherboard manufacturers that are mad about lost revenues are not happy with AMD. Maybe in the future those motherboard manufacturers won't produce motherboards for AMD processors. That's not too good for a company in hot competition with Intel. Finally the slot Thunderbirds out there are OEM processors made for the OEM market.
Due to thunderbirds probably not working with the KX-133 chipset the KT133 chipset was made by Via to be used with thunderbirds.
The bottom line is this StonedWheat: A Slot-A Athlon will work in that motherboard. A Thunderbird may or may not work in that motherboard. If you go for a thunderbird then its up to you to find out whether or not a thunderbird will.

Thanks for all the great info sbp! Actually, I did read that thread and my second post was just asking you if you were right about there being only socket tbirds. I'm not even gonna try to use the tbird with the kx-133 chipset anymore. I found that mobo on another site and it had a disclaimer saying "will not work with thunderbird athlon processors". DOH! I'll prolly sell it here or Flea-bay when I get it in the mail.
