Freeride has been up and available since 1998. Freeride is in no danger of dying because they are able to tone down on the number of awarded points simply by not offering them. Because they have been in business for awhile, the extra-large startup costs from the bonus signup awards have probably been covered up by the profits.
There was a long discussion of the profit that freeride makes from banners over on another forum. The posts were made mostly by people who had websites that hosted click-through banners, so the quality of posts was fairly high.
Some banners paid the host as much as 25 cents per click.. So, forum members started saying why should most of the revenue be collected by freeride when we could collect that entire amount ourselves?
It was generous of that forum website to allow the discussion of how forum members could create their own "spoof" websites that hosted banners in order to collect the 25 cents per click. Then, each of the forum members would click each others' website banners and that would mean they would collect several dollars per day in click royalties without having to have genuine website traffic. The approach on making a website was easy. Take an existing website that belongs to some company and copy all their webpage content over. Change the data on it some and then claim it as your own website. Some people have created "portals" instead of dedicated product sites. Then put banners on the webpages to make money. Because the website looks "legit", the banner company is willing to sign you up for click-through revenue. Then join the "click through" club where the members click on each others banners. Of course, I am sure that some people have thought of the idea of clicking on their own websites from any number of "free" accounts. The discussions for clicking club members probably takes place now on their own private board/email and so I am not privy to the newest details, but I am sure the following scenario has come up. Create umpteen netzero free accounts. Login to each netzero account via the new "internet/DSL/cable" option and then use that account to click on the various websites. If you have 10 accounts, that can be $2.50 per day just from your own clicking.
It is a fairly clever idea. The website "clicking club" is somewhat private. It seems to be successful so far...
