I originally posted this on DealHunting.com but I thought it was worth spreading around because it is such a worthwile thing for us apex'ers to do.

Yahoo donates 1 dollar for every user that clicks that pink ribbon on the left hand side of the page. My family has seen death from breast cancer and I know there are a lot of people out there who can relate to how it has affected them. Every dollar helps.

(I have no affiliation but have only a personal interest in helping to cure a life threatening disease)

Nice one. Shame about the disclaimer though - they're only gonna donate a maximum of $5000.

Still, every bit helps...

I believe this was a promotion during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I know they reached the maximum they had specified really quickly, and ended up doubling the amount they donated.

Every little bit helps people tho. My mother is fighting breast cancer, and it looks like shes going to win.

i do something similar. every day i go to http://www.thehungersite.com . it used to be that it would just feed the hungry masses, but now it is linked to other similar sites. one is a mammogram site.

I dislike the hunger site. It used to be a great site that was solely designed for sending money to feed the hungry. Ever since it changed hands, it is becoming more commercialized. No longer are they paying just if you see banners, but they are offering food for purchasing stuff. Stupid advertising if you ask me. Right now they are offering 50 cups of food for getting approved for a credit card. Usually affiliate programs pay $20+ for that. If I remember correctly, a cup of food was worth about 1.5c from their advertiser rates. Same goes for their clothing that is 2x normal cost and donates 30c to the hungry. No thanks. I'll send my own check to the UN.

And to break the camels back, they no longer seem to have the advertisers pay directly to the Un as they did at the onset. Instead the advertisers seem to pay them, and who knows how much of that goes to the UN. I once had that site as my home page, and now I rarely visit it.

I thought there was something earlier about thehungersite.com...

I still say the same thing. Just how do they expect this stuff to get done? Working for a non-profit does NOT mean you work for free.

When thehungersite first arrived on the scene, the advertisers were asked to send the checks directly to the UN. At that point in time there was no need to have a secondary source of income. When it was taken over by a corporate identity, the free advertising to their site should have been sufficient in income to cover the minimal costs of running the site.

Breakdown:
$500/year for dedicated server and bandwidth
Payment to whomever managed the site(likely 1-2 people part time)

Thats it. The design existed, the translations were done b volunteers, there were no marketing costs required. If I were a company who catered to shoppers inclined to support these programs, the simple link on the front page would be worth thousands a year in sales, at the very least. The site generates hundreds of thousands a month in advertising on the second page, with advertisers coming back(meaning they are turning a profit). Geez, thats what I call lucrative. The staff and infrastructure already existed, there was very little extra cost involved.

like i always say....if you try hard enough, you can find something wrong with anything. like ant and pennypinch say, it has to get paid for somehow. if food goes to the hungry, then good. i didn't have to "send my check directly to the UN," which is better. and i really didn't buy anything. i could have, but i just didn't. in addition, i can also just send my check to the UN.

now, if you were to tell me that the hunger site keeps all of the monies for themselves and that nothing goes to the hungry, then that is altogether different...
