I went through the checkout process until I got to the third page and BAM!! The least expensive shipping option is 3-5 Day Ground and costs $85. It also looks like Dell charges tax in CA.

While this looks like a sweet deal at first, the extra hundred you were saving goes straight shipping.

Thanks anyway, but unless there's a coupon code for shipping too... I think you Apex people have turned me into the cheapest MoFo I know, I need a coupon for everything now!

$85.00 for cheapest shipping and over $55 in taxes on top of that. Those idiots tax shipping! Still last time I checked CA tax wasnt 11%+. I called and they have no idea why Im even asking about the tax and excessive shipping. BAD DELL BADDD DELLL

Just figured the bottom line on the Dell system and with shipping and tax, (yes, Dell even nails us poor retired people here in Florida with sales tax) the price comes to $570.40. I have been looking at all the componets that it will take to build my own 800 MHz system for several months and it comes to more that that. They want $90 alone for WindowsMe.
If someone could show me a better deal with a build your own package, I SURE WISH THEY WOULD POST IT! The three years of free support is something I can't find with a home built either. Wonder how long this deal will hang around?

Seem like their site is down or something... I'm just hoping they don't tax NY. Did anyone order yet?

The only thing that gets me upset with this deal is why do they charge you $50.45 tax on a $435.00 sale. That is one heck of a tax rate. Isn't that like 11% sales tax. It's only 6% here in Florida. Tried to call to get a reason but it is after hours at Dell. Will be stuck until Monday unless someone has been given an answer already and can post the reason on the forum. Sounds like they are taxing the stuff that got taken off and a few mystery things.

Call Dell see if one can ship cheaper still through UPS to a close location. Obtain a tracking #... Call UPS and say that you have moved and need a change of delivery address. Now the comp has been delivered cheaply and tax free (Pick a tax free state) Montana or KS so on... Anyway this is totally legal. And if it so happens you can't get it shipped call Dell and complain that it never arrived and slide the address change in on them... Nothing illegal at all! I can confirm UPS will change address.

Even after taking out all the options (No case [subtract 60 dollars] it is 395.... meaning they caught their error!

The price is still $295... maybe you forgot to select the $100 coupon? This seems like a good deal to me, too bad I just bought a new Dell 6 weeks ago!

I will bet that some attorney general would like to know about that 11% tax rate and where it's going.I remember seeing a tax table recently for all of the States and I don't remember any of them having that high of a tax.

AmRivlin, like the idea. I think theyll still get $50.00 "handling fee." If anyone does the shipping thing or has their own shipping I'd appreciate you posting your method/final price. Anyone know which 800 chip/mobo they package and if the vid card is good? This close to picking one up> <

Yeah, I ordered a Dell 800mhz pc about a month ago. They didn't show tax on the order submission page. After I submitted my order, I received an email with my total price, including the 6% sales tax for Florida. I was very pissed off. They charge sales tax on the entire order, including the cost of shipping. I have never seen a retailer charge tax on shipping before! Anyway, I emailed their customer service dept to complain, but the rep told me that she couldn't do anything about tax issues and gave me a number to their tax dept. I conformed at that point and just dropped the issue as likely to go nowhere and therefore a waste of my time. I love my pc, and I did get it at a great price, but that was some sneaky stuff Dell pulled. At the very least, their order page should compute tax and give you a total price BEFORE you click submit. Rant off. :)

There are certain items which are taxable, shipping and handling isn't one of them. If I were you I'd have persued the matter further. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

hmm...I wonder if this will lead to another law suit. Anyway, I have no experience with Dell, but I do have experience with Compaqs and they suck because they can not be upgraded. Now, my question is, can a dell be upgraded? I mean, is it all components on one board, like the compaq? You know how we use PCI slots, and AGP, and ISA? Well, the compaq uses one AGP for the motherboard, on the mb, it has the sound card chip integrated, video card integrated, and some other things which I can't remember.

I just wanted to know if everything is integrated on the dell as well. Also, I believe the Video is integrated though...

thats the exact reason why they can be this low - they use integrated motherboards...
is that really bad? like how does it affect the perfornace of the pc? can you not upgrade it?

My Dell does NOT have integrated video and audio on the motherboard. I have a SB Live! Value card and an nVidia GeForce 256 video card that are PCI cards. Some of the lower level systems do make use of integrated audio/video, that's one way that get that unbelievable price point. Usually you can upgrade both by adding PCI cards and disabling the onboard audio/video in the system bios. Notice the use of the word usually, Compaqs for one had a bad history of being unable to upgrade due to proprietary hardware. I don't know if this is still the case. I steer clear of Compaqs (my personal opinion).

Maybe someone will get their head out of the sand and realize 1. This has integrated hardware and 2. It's not a super gamer machine, it's just a PC.

A friend of mine picked one up cause she wanted to get a PC her parents could get on the internet with.. That's about what it's most useful for.

It's a better price than one I could put together, even with deals. soo..

Just as FYI,

The deal is dead as of this morning... phone call in to Dell revieled the following:

- The $100 off rebate was supposed to go away last Friday
- Dell is losing $120 per system that they send out at these prices

...it does appear, however, that they will honor the deal.

Deal is dead right?

And btw it was an integrated video card.

The deal still exists, its just $100 more expensive now (no online check box thing).

On another note, I Emailed them a letter about the shipping to which they replied that it was taxable because the "handling" is taxable, and thus the "shipping and handling" charge as a whole is then taxable.

lame - if you ask me.

Just a small warning... the Live Card you have is OEM and when your free tech supports with Dell runs out, you'll be stuck up a creek w/o a paddle. Meaning, if you call creative, you won't get much support because it's OEM (Usually because the card or software is different than the real thing)

handling is "labor" (sp?) which I know for a fact is NOT taxable here in Oklahoma. (I've gotten some things at local shops tax-free because the charged me the whole amount in "labour" instead of charging for the product. :D)
