I hope someone can help me out here with this. I looking to get a new cpu and motherboard and am very much drawn to the AMD Thunderbird 1 gig. I'm not much into computers expect for that i want a damn good one. It's between a P3 866 or AMD Tbird. And if the Thunderbird is reliable, what about the motherboard issues. The price is right but, i've been hearing how it's unstable and that it eats power like a motha. P3 are cool and it's stable....... basically i want a cpu and motherboard that won't crash or freeze up constantly. Or if anyone could recommend a good combo for the AMD Tbirds and mothersboards, it would be apprieciated.

The AMD is rock solid stable if you use quality parts, but power hungry. (If you want to see unstable do a search on the Pentium 1133.)The power consumption is nothing a 250w or 300w power supply won't fix. Take a look at the ASUS A7V motherboard to go with your T-bird. There are other good ones like the Abit KT7, but I like the ASUS. Personal pref.
Also, you might want to wait a few more weeks and get a Mobo based on AMD's 760 chipset so you can use DDR ram. A lot more bang for just few more bucks.

Get the Thunderbird 1 gig and an Asus A7V or Abit KT7 motherboard k2audio.

Most thunderbird problems are avoided by getting athlon compatible memory and power supplies.

Buycomp has Antec's PP303X 300W POWER SUPPLY which is AMD recommended for Athlons for $37.82

I'd highly recommend you use an Alpha PAL6035 or GlobalWin FOP38 as a cooler. http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/1/cat1.htm?659
