PC Upgrade

Hey there everyone. Yes its your favorite RealGN admin coming to you guys for help. Well not help, just want to see if I am making the right decision.

Ok the deal is, that I am upgrading my home computer. Right now here is what I have.

Celeron 400 Oc'd -> 500 (Slot 1)
Abit BX6 r2
192 PC 100 ram
Ultra SCSI card and 9.1 gig 5400 RPM HD
GeForce SDR 32 meg
4*4*16 Yamaha CDR
32X CDRom
SB Live Platinum (w/ expansion card)
5 piece Yamaha Speaker Set

Ok, as you can see certain parts of my system are lacking. So here are the things I am upgrading to.

Intel P3 800 Mhz Slot 1 - $217.18 <-- Onvia.com
30GB ATA/100 IBM 75GXP 7200 - $149.99 <-- Onvia.com
ATA/100 Card from Promise - $31.73 <-- Onvia.com
Intellimouse Optical - $28.83 <-- from Outpost.com

Well I guess I am just wondering, I have about 100-200 dollars left to spend and was wondering what you guys think I should get, if anything at all. Also, if you guys know of any good rebates or deals (considering this IS gotapex ;) I'd love to know. I did some pretty extensive checking around, and Onvia had pretty much the best prices (not always the best best), but I love their free shipping and have been pleased with their service with prior purchases.

Anyways, any comments, questions, and so on are appreciated! Thanx

Maybe you can get a decent cd-rw. You have enough memory and SBLive Platinum and speakers are fine. A DVD-ROM or a True 72X CD-ROM would be nice. The Promise ATA/100 card is optional in my view. Your hard drive will perform just fine on the BX6 r2's ultra ATA/33 controllers.

Anywhoo, yea I guess the 100ish bucks would be well spent on beer for ya. Want me to ship it to ya in individual injectable packets, or just send the empty bottles? =)

Hehe anywhoo, my CDR is working out for me just fine actually, and the CDROM has never been a prob, so I think I will stick with that. But its interesting you say that the HD will perform just fine on the ATA33 card. You really think so?

If the CD-R and cd-rom are working fine stick with them.

Yeah the hard drive will perform well on the ATA/33 controller. ATA/100 is the theoretical burst rate for a hard drive. A more realistic consistent transfer data rate for the 75GXP series is about 37 MB/sec.

I'd upgrade the promise to a ata100 raid, downgrade the ibm 30 hd to a quantum 20gb 7200, but get 2.

If you really plan on getting a plain ata100 controller (which is a waste if you ask me), i have a cheap one that came with my mobo, if you're interested.

You might consider replacing your motherboard altogether and going with an AMD solution. You should be able to find a good MB with ATA 100 built in and an Athlon 800 processor for around $300. You could bump up the multiplier a notch or two for a little extra speed.

You might also consider replacing your CD-ROM with a DVD.
