my computer is nuts

so i decided to defrag... at around 84 % it just resets... crashes when doing scandisk... and now it randomly loads... sometimes crashes in scandisk... crashed in bios.... crashed in dos.... and sometimes i don't even get video output but can hear it all loading... any suggestions???

You should try to run scan disk at startup and do a full scan. If you already tried that, see if you can safely run it under safe mode. Of course if nothing works then everyone's favorite option is formating!! (Note the sarcasm)

i would try that... only problem is that half the time my computer would freeze even before i get the option to choose to load in safe mode.... any ideas of what i need to replace to make my computer work... i don't care what i need to buy... thanks

crashed in BIOS? I thought I was the only one who had that problem before. LOL. Since you have so many problems, have you considered dualboot win98 with win2k?

Make sure you have nothing running, including screen savers.

If you are overclocking, put everything back to stock, including i/o voltage and cpu voltage. Take out all un-necessary items and reinstall them one by one.

Yes, try and reset your electrical settings before defragging, defragging is a very processor consuming aspect and the heat controllor(sync i believe it is called) on your processor might shut down due to so much heat buildup, it is an automatic saftey mesaure in some processors I believe. The time taking to get to 84% is probably the amount of time it takes to get to that degree of temperature. So de-overclock your computer, and if you didn't overclock your computer, well.. I got 2 works for you. FDISK, FORMAT

are you running windows me?
if so theres a known bug that screws up your computer when you defrag, its never happened to me but i guess that might be because i use norton speed disk.

i cant seem to find the fix for it, i updated something through windows update and after i rebooted windows help told me about it.

EDIT:
also make sure you wait a long time after you think your computer has locked up, sometimes if you just let it sit for a long time (sometimes up to a half hour or so) it'll just start working.

I had a problem like this once...I didn't know what was wrong...and I didn't want ot reformat my computer. So I just took a wild guess and changed my RAM. I took out both my 64 megs of RAM chips and replaced them with a 128 meg chip and now my computer works fine...tell me how that works...I don't know :)

Easiest way should be through safe mode, but I'm not sure why your comp is crashing to not let you get to safe mode. Underclock your proc as everbody said. Also make sure you got about 10% freespace on your drive that'll help. And god forbid you're trying to defrag with the defraging proggy that windows gives you. Get norton or Mcafee's disk defraging prgram, those are much better.

I say...never use anything that microsoft gives you. they always have mose crappy stuff. Like spigidygak said. Use norton.

Microsoft Defrag is fine. although Norton Utilities is a good program, it uses way too many system resources to really be worth it. Diskkeeper is a good defragger for NT/Win2k.
