Just got a DS lite... for those times when i need a break from my DAT books. Anyone have a DS here? or even a GBA? If so, what are the best games in your opinion? Any tips or tricks?

I have a DS, though not a DS lite. I think the first things you need to get is a screen protector for the touch screen. I can see the marks made on mine from Meteos and I shudder to think what would happen without it.

As far as games, I would recommend the new Super Mario Bros, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga (and Partners in Time), Advance Wars, Meteos, and Metroid Prime Hunters.

Mario Kart is good, Metriod Prime Hunters is great.

I have just the GBA and I like some old school Tetris DX. I like Advance Wars also.

I've also looked at the DS, it looks solid. However the biggest thing for me is that it cannot play all the older GBC and original GB games. As I only have a couple GBC and a Pocket this doesn't sit well with me. But the system looks cool. I know the GBA plays the old ones....

so for those of you who have the DS or lite, is it worth it?

I mainly got it for the mario games (new super mario, mario 64, mario kart). Combine that with wifi multiplayer which works across the internet and i think its a pretty awesome package.

my wife got one for me as an early bday present... unfortunately for me, she's in love with it.

http://www.fotohs.net/uploader/files/1/IMG_5957b.jpg

right now, i only have new super mario and big brain academy. what more can i say about super mario that hasn't already been said. it's a perfect blend of old and new. i love it...whenever i get the chance to play. :) my wife mainly plays big brain academy. based upon how much she plays, i would say it's quite addicting. my next games: brain age, mario kart.

i'm not that much of a gamer. i just like to keep myself occupied when i'm: doing laundry, shopping w/ the mrs, riding the bus, etc. one thing i'm looking forward to is the release of opera browser for the ds. check email on free wifi! w00t!

yeah...so i'm just waiting until she gets bored of it so i can play. heh, we even talked about getting a second ds lite. could be worthwhile since we can then play against each other.

yup. it's for those who don't have a wireless internet connection. if you have a wireless router, you're good to go.

i'm pissed off that the DS doesn't support WPA! I think i'm going to have to get a cheap router and tack it on with a heavy firewall.

I notice that you can apparently download demo games or something to the DS. Anyone know if you'll be able to download Wii Virtual Console games too?

I'm thinking about buying a DS Lite sometime in the near future, but have one question about it.

It seems that some games use the nifty method of character movement using both the stylus and D-pad simultaneously. I happen to be left handed, and I think it would be difficult for me to use the stylus and D-pad in tandem.

Do the games have a play control configuration that would allow a left-handed person to use the stylus with their left hand while controling the other movements with the 'action' buttons (A,B,X,Y)?

BigJon
06-20-2006, 10:11 AM
Some games do I believe. I have heard that Metroid allows you to change from "left handed" to "right handed" control. Keep in mind that not all games use the stylus though. A lot of the games allow you to control without the stylus. Mario Kart DS only uses the stylus for menu navigation and drawing your custom icon...but you can avoid that by just using the d-pad and buttons.

Cubsfan
06-20-2006, 10:57 AM
Ok, so I've only got a couple of games, but I haven't encountered one that uses them both simultaniously. Usually it's either or (i.e. for Mario Bros., the mini games use the stylus, the game uses the controls).

Brain Age, which ONLY uses the stylus, does ask you if you are right or left handed, but that's mainly because you hold the DS like a book for that game.

Are those brain games any fun? Is it just like puzzles and stuff that you have to solve in a certain amount of time? Kind of like taking an IQ test...

I'm picky when it comes to my games...I don't like buying a game unless I really know I'm gonna like it. :D

i have big brain academy. the difference between this and brain age is that brain age is more numbers-based, whereas big brain academy is more visual.

the games/tests themselves aren't hard, but you have to do as many as you can in a certain amount of time (yes, kinda like an IQ test). i don't play it much...but that's because my wife hogs up my DSLite.

I've got an "og" DS (or the "fat boy" as some call it). :)
I have:
-Nintendogs (my DS is the limited edition blue one they released last Xmas that came with Nintendogs, some paw print stickers, and some other stuff)
-Meteos (one of the best puzzle games ever)
-Mario Kart: DS (tied for #1 best MK game with MK: DD on the GC)
-Brain Age: Train Your Brain In Minutes A Day ($20 well spent)
-Kirby: Canvas Curse (excellent game, uses the stylus very very well)
-Trauma Center: Under The Knife (HIGHLY underrated game - very fun, one of my favorites)
-Animal Crossing: Wild World (I've played it for about 10 minutes, my wife - 100 hours :) I can't get any playtime in)

Yeah we should set up a G|A MK: DS tourney...any of you guys "snakers"? I hate snakers. :bash:

TofuNinja
06-21-2006, 09:57 AM
what's a snaker?

BigJon
06-21-2006, 10:55 AM
If you are familiar with Mario Kart DS, there is a technique called the "mini boost" or "drift boost" where while turning, you can hold down the R button and push the d-pad from left to right, repeatedly. Your tires will then turn blue, then orange and when you let go of the R button you will have a 5 second boost.

Snaking is using this technique on a straightaway and linking one boost after another. Drift left, boost, then while still boosting, drift right and boost again. Over and over until you can't do it anymore.

While you're doing this, your kart moves from side to side on the track like a snake in an S pattern. Because of the continual boost, you will either get away from or catch up with an opponent very quickly.

Just picked up the lite this weekend and it's freaking awesome. The screen is blinding bright and. Picked up mario kart and the new mario game also. Only downer is they left out the lanyard/thumb stylus thing which I found sorta nice to use when I had a fatboy one. Anyhow beside the fact after having a ds and psp I've found the ds lite to be the perfect mobile gaming device for me.

Oh and forgot to mention electroplankton. Not really a game just a fun thing to tool around with when you wanna just zone out.

Had a question myself though, what kind of case do you all use to carry the games around? I'm trying to find something fairly minimal as possible, I don't care for a case for the actual ds.

what's a snaker?

BigJon explained it correctly, but just to add (if you didn't realize already) snaking is extremely cheap and makes matches boring for people like me who can't snake and/or wouldn't if they could snake. A lot of people out there think it should be banned and removed from the game, but Nintendo's stance is that they put it in there for people to use it. Apparently snaking first appeared in F-Zero GX or something and similar problems happened there also.

If you can't/don't snake and you race against someone who does (and is good at it), you'll never catch them no matter how many red or blue shells or gold mushrooms that you get. They should make it to where you can filter your online matches to include or exclude snakers and that would solve the problem there; hopefully they'll do it for the next Mario Kart they release with online play.

Unless it's a LOOOONG trip, this thing's battery has a friggin long life. I played it for awhile one day, then the next, and only charged it because the wifi was draining my batteries too much...I could have switched to single player mode and probably ran for another hour. They say it gets 6 hours playtime (15 supposedly if you run on the lowest brightness setting).

I would reccommend at least screen protectors and a case. Car charger and game cases afterwards. I haven't bought screen protectors yet and don't wanna even touch my screen until I do (probably pick up a pack this weekend).

I'm currently using an old Nintendo Gameboy Advance (official Nintendo licensed case) carry case. It's a little big for the DS Lite...but well padded and has enough room to carry the power cord and a couple of games.

EBGames sells a metal "breifcase" style case that has dividers inside for the system, games, accessories, etc.

EDIT: just realized too that you were only looking for GAME cases. Oh well...

me the the GF picked up our DS Lites at Costco. 165.99 for the DS, New Super Mario, Glow in the Dark Stylus (meaning we have three now), screen cleaner, Game Case, Ear Buds, and Screen protector.

We also picked up Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire each of us, and Brain Age. My GF was curiosu about playing Brain Age after I was showing her some stuff on it, and I haven't seen it since haha. Hoping for some sells at Target or somewhere tomorrow.

Hey with Big Brain, I was reading about their multiplayer..... on the official website is says this.

Big Brain Academy features a riotous multiplayer mode in which up to eight people can play with a single Game Card. Players will compete in randomly chosen activities, winning "brain grams" by completing each activity first. The first player to score a brain weight of 300 grams wins the competition and the results will be displayed for all to see!

Does that mean if you buy the game, only one person needs to have it to play in verses mode? or does everyone need it?
Me confused.

?? are you talking about the DS cartridge on the homepage which allows you to make homebrew apps and run them on the DS with a real cartridge instead of a GBA one? I'd be interested to hear if that works on the DS lite, since I heard there was some security improvements which cause hacks that worked on the DS to fail on the DS lite.

Either way, it's not quite what I'm talking about - I'm referring to something where you just plop some files onto a memory card, and then the cartridge plays it. No flashing needed. Unless i'm completely misunderstanding how these things work (I'm new at consoles).

Get a Passme 2 device (on the site) and a ez4 lite (also on the site). Then you just buy a transflash card, plop your files on it and you can play them on your dslite. The ez4 lite TF will only work with the dslite, but it fits in almost flush with nothing sticking out.

so I just got a DS Lite yesterday from Best Buy. It was a purchase made on a whim, because I was feeling whimsy like that. :)

Anyways, I also got the Starter Pack that they sell there, which includes a case, screen cleaning cloth, 2 screen protectors, 3 additional styluses (stylii?), half dozen game cases, car charger, and earphones, all for $25. Which isn't too shabby except that the case sucks. Any recommendations on a case that can fit not only the DS but also accessories as well?

Plus, what are the recommended games nowadays? I know I *have* to get Mario Kart DS and Tetris DS...

Also, anyone have experience with the R4DS? I hear theres lots of really good homebrew programs out there, and allegedly someone even ported Lemmings (http://www.mrdictionary.net/lemmings/) to the DS. That sounds like a hands-down FTW right there!

the only Real item you need is a screen protector. While the touchscreens are resilient, they develop microscratches the moment you touch your stylus to it.

A screen protector will allow you to easily clean the screen, and increase its longevity 10 fold.

This is coming from a PocketPC user (I learned the hard way).
