End of an Era -- Verizon Airfone Disconnect
THE ONCE UBIQUITOUS SEATBACK AIRFONE HANDSETS ARE SET TO BE DISCONNECTED by the end of this year, Verizon has announced. Verizon picked up Airfone when it acquired GTE in 2000. Though 21-year-old Airfone is still exploring the option of selling the business, Verizon says it will disconnect and remove phones from nearly 1,000 commercial aircraft operated by Continental, Delta, United and US Airways. Airfone will continue to provide phone service to 3,400 corporate and government jets.
