Just read this report on our schools.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/06/27/dobbs.june28/index.html

if you'll notice, towards the end of the article it mentions the kalamazoo promise.

i live in portage, mi. 3 miles from the kalamazoo city limit. sigh....

more details on the program.

Where do they get the figures which state that workers with degrees make three times more than high school dropouts? That would be $56,000 per year, according to their figures.

I don't think so.

are you saying that number is high or low? you don't think degreed workers average $56k? i'm surprised the number is that low!

It all depends on the degree. But I seriously doubt that most workers with degrees make more than $40K.

Parade in the Sunday paper has an issue every year which states average salaries. Other than engineers and upper end health care workers, I don't recall many workers having wages in the $55-$60K range.

that would be pretty cool cheapie, have you kids started school yet? it might be worthwhile to make the move... or maybe not.

i can't imagine that we'll still be in this area in 13 years so i'm not going to move. plus, the taxes are higher so that would offset a bit of the savings.

$40k is only $20/hour. you don't think college grads through their career average that? mebbe i'm spoiled but i don't know if we could make it only making that now.

Luggage Handlers at Newark Airport make at least $20/hour.

When I graduated from college I was offered 40K starting 7 years ago. When I worked on campus I started at minumum wage and got up to 10/hour as a network tech. To me at least in my area and my industry, a salary that's 3 times someone else without a degree seems about right.

depends on what they mean by degree. if they're including associate's degrees, i agree with johnnymk. otherwise...

i'm trying to think of the lowest starting salaries for college degrees. bs, and even phd, in wide swaths of "gee whiz" science get you $20,000 if you're lucky enough to get a job... ma in architecture can get you as little as the mid 30s... but an awful lot of bs/ba's will get you more.

i dunno. 56,000 might be right, for bs/ba and up, averaged over a career... i'd call it high before i'd call it low, though. i mean, if the us median income is, what... is that in the upper 40s? and 25% of working adults have a college degree (or is that just 25% of gen-xers and younger?)

okay. i don't know enough to figure this out, so i'm going to go microwave some food now...
