When I open task manager, theres a process in there that is named:

4eab8f9c.exe

I have no idea what that is, nor how to get rid of it, and Google turns up empty.

Anyone have any ideas?

Where's the executable located on your computer? Just do a Start->Search to see where it is. That might give you a clue.

Try this:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Maybe it'll tell you a little about it.

Also, if you're running 2K or XP, download Windows Defender.

You can get it from here http://100-downloads.com/download.php?p=32 without going through all the WGA crap.

Note - Defender is an .msi file. Download it to your desktop and then right-click on the file and select "Install" to install it.

Under Tools, go to the Software Explorer (the help file there is pretty good) to investigate / block the process.

ah, sometimes the best solution is the simplest and the most obvious.... found 2 instacnes of it, one in the system32 folder one in the "Documents and Settings" folder. Both shall be deleted, and then registry cleaned.

thanks for your responses! :)

It could also be an antivirus file. Some companies like Trend Micro, have a service running as a random file name to prevent virii from closing the AV program. In the event that the program gets stopped, the service will restart your AV software for you.

It's a virus tactic applied to antivirus software.
(Trend's is called watchdog and has a dog icon in Process Explorer)
