Supposedly, there is software which will do this, but I have been unsuccessful even with a Google search.
I want to change the firmware on an old HP 9100 CDRW to a 9110 to read subcode.
It must work in DOS mode or Windows 98SE.
Driveinfo in DOS only reads my hard drive, although it is supposed to work for CDROMS and CDRWs.

You might want to try looking for firmware for a Sony CRX140E.
According to something on this page, they *may* be the same unit. I didn't do any searching for updated firmware for the Sony, but I bet it's easier to find than HP. Good luck, and if you fry the thing, don't blame me. :D

I may have found the problem. It appears that the 9100b was made by a different company. i.e. Goldstar. So I may be out of luck:thumbdown

Ughh...Good luck with finding any updates for Goldstar. Are they even around these days? If you can afford it, it might be a good idea, just to buy a new cdrw.

This is the problem. I bid on 20 HP units. I was the successful bidder. About an hour later, I realized that they were the units mentioned in that link you posted.
So I emailed the seller and the next low bidder to see if they could work out a deal and I would pay the difference. I thought everything was OK and then I get a email from the seller that he hasn't received payment from me. I am hoping it's an automatic message which is sent out after a few days. So I contacted him and the next low bidder. I haven't heard from either of them, possibly because the seller is a business and they don't work on weekends, and whatever reason from the bidder.
I may end up with a bunch of CDRWs which I can't use.
