Death of Applause?

When is the last time you heard applause at the end of a movie? Believe it or not, that used to happen all the time. If the movie was especially good, the audience would burst into spontaneous applause. I swear, the last time I heard that was after Purple Rain way back in 1984.

Also, passengers used to applaud after a plane landed. Every time.

Are we less likely to show approval now?

We live in different times now... most movies aren't "cinematic masterpieces" of yesteryear.

Although I do remember hearing applause at the conclusion of Star Wars III

In the case of movies, maybe the theater staff should applaud us for paying nearly $10 ticket and an extra $10-$15 on food. :hihi:

i guess the lesson to be learned here is that dorks clap more than other folks. i guess X2 wasn't really too dorky. 'cept it is a comic book creation. and comic book fans truly deserve the dork title.

I only hear applause at movies during the first week of them coming out. After that....I usually don't hear anything.

Sometimes everybody is just looking for someone to clap first...why don't you be that person WP? If you and your fam start clapping at the end of the movie, others are sure to follow along...or just give you weird looks. :shifty:

or....companies have taken the joy out of many activities that were once relaxing. movies didn't used to cost an arm and a leg. we didn't have to sit through 30 minutes of commercials and previews. we used to be served by cheerful gate agents and smiling flight attendants. now surly, poorly-paid, and grumpy flight attendants serve overworked, tired, and stressed travelers.

I was on a flight once where everyone applauded after landing, but it was because there was a storm and we were all happy to be alive.

(it wasn't really that bad, but passengers were freaking out, some were barfing from both turbulance and nerves)

It's not that...

You gotta realize that back in the day, going to the movie or taking a "plane trip" was something SPECIAL... something you didn't do every other day.

But now, those are "common" day events... just like everything else in life (Remember when a family had only ONE television, and even it was in Black and white? Watching TV as a kid was a "privledge"... not just "something to do" like it is now.)

I think I nearly clapped when "The Thin Red Line" finally ended.

I know I sat through a couple of movies where people clapped at the end - I know this because Burzhui would be one of the ones clapping and I'd call him an idiot.

I flew several times when people clapped. I think this was post-9/11 and people were just happy that we flew without incident.

I absolutely hate when people clap and cheer in the movie theater. It's so annoying and extremely disruptive when it's done mid-movie. It always happens on opening night with a movie theater full of super dorks who are dressed up in costume to see a movie like LOTR or Star Wars.

The only time I like it is when I go see a "black" movie. It's a whole different environment, it's like a ****in' party.

To answer your question though, I don't think we're less likely to show approval. For decades live audiences have had to been told when to applaud with lit-up signs. It's not some sort of new trend where people don't want to clap. Every concert I goto people love to applaud and usually do so loudly until the performers come back on stage for an encore.

Well... You have to understand that was back in 1984 when Prince was really cool. Back then, he was kind of like a younger, blacker, more soulful Bruce Springsteen.

the average viewer just wants an escape from reality for a couple hours.

I was once in an in-flight emergency flying into Las Vegas for a tech convention. It happened just a week after I proposed to Mrs. Kevster so I was more than just a little concerned. The pilot was very calm and informed us of what was going on, then proceeded to start circling and dumping fuel over the desert and Lake Mead. When we landed safely, everyone applauded the pilots for getting us down safe and sound. I still remember clearly at how they rolled the emergency equipment in anticipation of our arrival (never seen that before, or since).

i guess. the view is certainly better in a theater but the sound in my basement is incredible. and the neighbors would agree. :heh:

in fact, it's so good that when the movie is done, my guests start clapping. :P

on the airline EVA, they take a bow and thank everybody for riding EVA, and the travelers give them a little clap. it's quite kind if you ask me.
