Well, watch the vid. I can't say I'm surprised.

Surprises me that someone didn't stop to at least ask them what they were doing. It doesn't amaze me as to how easy it is to break one of those locks. I use a "U" lock on my bike. It is able to be defeated but it is more difficult than a masterlock and chain.

Unless you have a bic pen. I think the reason no one cares is because it's NY. Too much fear of confrontation or just general apathy.

NYC and LA is the most jaded cities in the US.
what do you expect.
haha thats great.
I've had all my bikes stolen here in Austin. One time I came home from class to drop a quick deuce and then go back. I don't think I was in the house much longer than 5 minutes when the bike was already gone.

I guess since my kryptonite is not that old (i.e. bought after 2000) mine is impervious to the bic pen. :P

That refers to the super clunky, 20 lb "New York" style kryptonite locks. They don't have the circle key.

Umm the guy appeared to know what he was doing. He was working in broad day light and not acting conspicuous. Now imagine if you had a bike a chain and lock, and you lost your key.
Would you not roll up with a bolt cutter to cut free your bike? My guess is people see this daily and can't tell if its for good or evil. And lets say it is for evil, are you willing to risk being shot over a bike of someone you dont know? If someone screamed, thats my bike! I bet there would have been reactions.

i hate bike thieves. for some reason i consider bike theft more aggregious than many other crimes.
mostly because many people ride bikes because they can't/don't want to buy a car and it's much more than just a piece of exercise equipment.
and also because many people form a bit of an emotional attachment to their bike. i know i'd rather have my car, HT, money, etc stolen than my Ellsworth. even tho' insurance would cover it, i would be pretty upset if it was snatched by some punk that didn't take care of it or dumped it at a pawn shop for far less than it's worth.

I stopped a bike thief once. Instead of cutting the lock he was unbolting the wheel that was locked so he could take the rest of it. It was right outside my apartment window at the time. All I did was tell him to get the hell away from that bike, and he moved on. (Probably went around the corner and stole a different bike, though...)

Honestly, it's just sad that we live in a society where someone can just snatch your stuff like that in BROAD daylight with folks walking around and nobody gives a sheeeyat....
Just goes to show where we are headed... :2far:
Too bad you can't fit a "trunk monkey" in a bicycle seatpack. :heh:
