Hey all, there is a group of fans that is trying to donate the season 1 box set of Veronica Mars dvds to libraries across the country, to try and help get new fans to the show, etc. It's a huge project!
Anyway, they are still looking for some contacts in some libraries and I wanted to ask your help. Here's the site: http://www.watchveronicamars.net/ You can read all about the campaign.
Anyway, I called a town on their list near me and found out they accept TV on DVD donations for circulation and since my grandparents live in Birmingham, which is on their list, I asked my grandma to make some phone calls. (Birmingham proper does not have TV on DVD at their libraries so I had her call some of the suburbs, like North Shelby County Library and she has calls in to the library at Hoover & another place as well.
Anyway, I just think it's hysterical that I'm using my grandma to help distribute Veronica Mars. :D My grandma rocks!
Here is a list of towns/markets that they still need contacts in. It isn't updated so some of these they may not need anymore but most probably do:
NIELSEN MARKETS - Still Need Contacts
32 Columbus, OH
34 Cincinnati, OH
38 West Palm Beach, FL
44 Memphis, TN
46 Albuquerque/Santa Fe
47 Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem
49 Buffalo, NY
52 Jacksonville, FL (important due to limited UPN)
57 Little Rock
59 Dayton, OH
63 Lexington, KY
64 Charleston, WV
71 Tucson, AZ
72 Honolulu
76 Syracuse
77 Springfield, MO
79 Rochester, NY
80 Paducah/Cape Girard, KY/MO
83 Columbia, SC
84 Huntsville/Decatur, FL
87 South Bend, IN
89 Jackson, MS
92 Harlingen/Brownsville/McAllen, TX
94 Waco/Temple/Bryan, TX
95 Davenport/Rock Island/Moline, IL
96 Baton Rouge
97 Savannah
98 Johnstown/Altoona, PA
100 Evansville, IN
1) Make sure you are talking to someone with knowledge/authority. The main operator may be a volunteer who only knows the "all donations go to Friends of the Library" script, but in reality, a librarian would be thrilled to add an unopened DVD set to the collection.
2) If you get turned down by someone who seems dismissive of the show, try another branch or the Young Adult librarian for better results: it might be helpful to check their online catalog to see if they have similar types of shows already (Smallville, Buffy, 24 are all good searches).
3) Many systems simply do not stock TV on DVD, so do not be disheartened. Try a University library perhaps.
The main thing is that you have to be sure that a DONATED set of the DVDs would go into circulation and NOT be sold. These people have raised tons of money to buy the DVDs and they don't want it wasted if the library will just sell it to someone else.
If you live in or near one of those cities and want to help me (them!) out, please please do! If you contact a library and they don't have VM on dvd but would accept a donation to be put into circulation, please get the address, the library name and the name of whoever you talk to so I can send it to the lady from the VM site that I've been in contact with.
I'd appreciate any help you guys can give, but please don't feel like you have to. :)
TIA!
