I have about 100 cassettes that I would like to turn into mp3 files.
I have no clue on how to do it. I do believe that all that is needed is a tape player, a wire that plugs from that tape player to your computers "Audio Input" port. But i do not know what applications to use to do something like this, nor any tutorials on how such a procedure is to be done.
Any advice would be welcomed.

all you need is some wav recording software. It catches whatever sound comes in through the "mic" port of your computer. then you just need the audio cable. Usually speaker sets for your computer that aren't the bargain price ones have a cable that separates from the speakers themselves and thus the cable has the audio connection on both ends.
Plug one end into the tape deck headphone port, one end into the computer mic port. Hit record, and hit play.. make some wav's. And then compress them using winamp or some other program.
:) Have fun.

You can also use something like this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/7a8d/
It's no different than hooking up an external player, but at least it packages together everything that you need.

For audio editing, I use the freeware program Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). Really easy to use, and it also has plugins that can remove tape hiss and such.

For the weekend? Just remember, this has to be done in real time.
I would bet that 100 tapes will take at least 100 hours.

I meant reading up on how to use Audacity would be a weekend project. The tape transfers will take.. alot longer than 100 hours.
