GM plans to bring back Chevrolet Camaro
Report: Automaker plans announcement this week of muscle car's return

Updated: 19 minutes ago
DETROIT - General Motors Corp. plans to bring back the Chevrolet Camaro as a production vehicle, according to a published report.

GM Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner is expected to announce the return of the muscle car in a speech Thursday at an automotive conference in Traverse City, the Detroit Free Press reported Sunday.

The production version could be built as early as 2008, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the plans.

GM spokesman Christopher Preuss said Sunday he couldn't comment on the report.

GM had won praise for its Camaro concept, which was unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 2002 model year was the last for the Camaro, which began its run with the 1967 model.

Comment: Looks great, but auto trans only??? And what's with the long skinny rear view door mirrors? Looks like a linebacker holding his pinkie up while he sips a latte.

Even so, I'd definately like to take it for a spin.

The prototype was gorgeous. I hope they don't end up butchering the production car like they usually do.

One of the car mags drove the Camaro prototype at Milford (GM Proving Grounds) and the article author said he was a tight fit at 5'7".

I guess this means I'd have to figure out how to get 6 to 8 inches shorter in height to be able to drive it...

This really is no surprise. Out of the cars they have cancelled I always wondered why the Camaro was one of them.

This really is no surprise. Out of the cars they have cancelled I always wondered why the Camaro was one of them.

1)It was overpriced, especially compared to the Mustang.

2)I believe Mustang sold more cars than Camaro and Firebird combined annually.

3)The market for that type of car was diminishing. The imports have gradually replaced it.

4)It was getting uglier and uglier.

This is still a big gamble for GM. Expensive gas and a very limited market could kill this car in no time.

I'd worry about its success, especially with the gas prices right now.

Then again, Ford has done alright with the new Mustang, so a market is there. If there were a way, like in the M5 to have a "normal" base horsepower/engine-gas-consumption and a "muscle-car-fast" mode that would drink a lot of gas, it may even edge out the mustang. The M5 runs at 400 hp unless you push a button that allows you to hit 500 hp.

I do miss the F body, even though this new car won't really be one. I drove a '91 Camaro from 1997-2003 (paid $3k for it and got $1k on the trade-in :) ), and it was a fun car to drive. It was a V6, but it was torquey as hell, and it was fun to kick the tail out intentionally when turning sharply into the near lane, etc.

I'm also glad the prototype has a retro look. I only wish they would do the same for the Corvette, instead of making it look like some sort of space ship.

I think the prototype looks hideous. I think the car will do fine as long as their niche market of spoiled high school jocks with rich dads who wish to wrap themselves around trees on the weekends exists.

looks too much like a cross of the charger and a caddy for me

I kinda like the retro-muscle car look. It would also be a decent car for someone who wants gobs of horsepower without spending gobs of $$.
