You uninstalled Norton? Did your subscription run out?
Personally, I usually get the newest version of Norton AV in the new year's Norton Systemworks Premier package and just keep it rolling. So far so good with them for me.... :D

I gave Norton the boot off my system a couple of years ago. It was just becoming to much of a performance hog. I've been running Panda with pretty good success (Platinum 2006 goes for $15 at either geeks.com or surpluscomputers.com, I don't remember which). I like having a firewall with outbound detection.
If you're looking to go the free route, AVG has been pretty good. For a firewall, you could use ZoneAlarm free or Comodo (http://www.comodogroup.com/).

I'd run AVG (http://100-downloads.com/download.php?p=51) and Windows Defender (http://100-downloads.com/download.php?p=32) (assuming you're running 2K or XP) along with Spyware Blaster (http://100-downloads.com/download.php?p=38).
