Anyone know where I can pick up a used tranny in OC?
I found a used tranny for $125 but the dude tells me it has about 30,000 miles on it and it's from a 1992-4 DX/LX and will fit a 98 civic.
1st off only 30K made me kind of skeptical especially if the car is a 92-94 and doesn't the DX/LX tranny have longer gears = longer acceleration?
what's your take?
thanks

I dunno. If it really has only 30k on it, it seems like it would b e fine, unless it was heavily abused. No idea about the gear ratios though. Also take into consideration whether you want quick acceleration or good mileage.

Ask the guy if he would let you take it to a tranny expert. Many things can be inspected once the cover is taken off of the trans,i.e. worn synchros, broken gears, condition of fluid. And I believe some of the bearings can be easily tested by applying hand pressure, but I could be wrong.
What is wrong with your trans?

At first my clutch was taking a sh!t, which was replaced.
After the clutch replacement everytime I sit in traffic and ride in second it would pop out, now if I accelerate hard it doesn't pop out. Also if I drive steady in second gear without jerking the car it usually stay in gear. Getting to be annoying especially in 405 traffic. I can't drive in 1st gear and 3rd won't accelerate. :throw:

I could be wrong, but it sounds like something in the shifter or an adjustment there.
Or possibly something in the self adjuster for the clutch? But, highly unlikely.

I'd take it to a mech before you go pulling the tranny and putting in some unknown hulk...

If everything fails, I could highly recommend to you my mechanic but you'll have to come over here in Sunny Sun Diego on Miramar road. Let me know if you're interested.:bandit: :bandit: :bandit:

is it possible that the linkage is causing the gear to pop out or a bad engine/tranny mount?

Yep, if a mount is bad, the motor/trans moves, which in turn can load the linkage and pop the trans out of gear.

I wonder if the mechanic didn't tighten something when he replaced the clutch.

can I re-adjust the linkage to correct the problem?

I am not familiar with this setup. If it were me, I would inspect the linkage and look for something loose. Get someone to play with the shifter while you look at where it interfaces with the tranny. It may not be that simple, though.

not sure how good ammco is but I'm going to get it inspected by them for free99 ;-)

If in fact a motor mount or trans mount is worn or broken, the solution is to replace the worn or broken part. Adjustment won't correct the root cause of the problem.

Free inspections are generally worth about what you pay for them.

Did you have this problem before the clutch was replaced? If not, I can't imagine the engine or trans mount busted in that short time after it eas replaced. If you had that problem before it was replaced, then mechmike is correct and an adjustment would be useless.
Why don't you take it back to the guy who replaced the clutch?

I felt I was robbed by that mechanic. He did the job I asked him to do but if he knew the problem was something else wouldn't he have atleast told me?

3 busted engine mounts could of contribute the tranny problem. :gle:

Well that's what aamco told and beside the mechanic that fixed my car about a year ago told me that my engine mount will cause shifting problem. To be bad he isn’t around to fix the problem since he passed away recently and I finally remembered he told me that once upon a time...
