i'm trying to get my 'puter to recognize my slingbox on my home network and apparently officescan sees it as a threat and won't let me access it. and this is according to the slingbox support guy.

is there any way to keep officescan from automatically loading when i boot up?

it's not a huge deal because once i set up the box i'll be able to use it because the software works fine when i'm outside my home network. i just need to do the initial setup. or have someone come over and do so w/their computer.

If you do Start / Run and enter "msconfig" and go to the Startup tab, you might be able to see where it is launching from. I usually don't like to disable things from within msconfig, as it changes from a "normal" to "selective" startup which (in my experience) can sometimes be troublesome. There are other free applications that do a similar thing (one of my favorites is Startup Inspector (http://www.windowsstartup.com/startupinspector.php)) and allow you to easily disable or enable various programs that get launched when you boot up.

If you administrator has set it up properly, you can't shut it down or stop it from loading. You CAN, however, force the process to stop until the next time you reboot, assuming you have local admin rights on your machine.

Just go to Computer Management (right click My Computer, choose Manage). Expand Services & Applications, click on Services. In the right pane, look for the 'OfficeScan' entries - there will probably be 3 of them. Just right click on each of them & choose 'stop'. That should shut them down until you reboot.
