View Full Version : My name is Kim, and I am addicted to 24...
this show is like crack, I swear. GAM, this isn't really an entertainment thread, but if you think it should be moved, please do so, and I am sorry for posting in the wrong place.
I'm watching season 4 this weekend, and it made me think about some thing...
The pulse bomb: do we have these, and how do they work? I get that they knock out power and stuff, but how? Is it permanent? What does it take to repair the damage?

Last I heard, meaning that a real scientist could and should correct me, is that these do not exist in the sense that 24 and Ocean's Eleven use them.
They do exist as they were used in Dark Angel (mmm, Jessica Alba) which is as a nuclear explosion over a certain area that would cause an electro-magnetic disturbance, and cause all electronics within that area to be fried beyond repair. Thus, to recover from it would require bringing in, or building, all new electronics.
A pulse bomb would theoretically recreate those large electromagnetic waves, but nothing that large has been built (again, to my knowledge).

actually, the Navy experimented with them in the first gulf war, and there were reports of some use in the last war. EMP bombs. Supposedly the soviets went further with them, but using specialized nukes for a high atmosphere explosion.
The thing about EMP is that it doesn't really knock out everything - older tech would be just fine, for example - and circuits aren't really all equally vulnurable. It also wont always out and out fry the equipment, depending. As weapons, they really are kind of a crap shoot as how effective they would be.

****************Emmy Spoiler***************
Obviously, the Emmy board agrees with Kim as it won for Best Drama and Keifer won for best actor tonight on the Emmy telecast

It's ok. I watched the first season on DVD. I watched 6 episodes in a row, I couldn't stop. Then it took me almost a year to watch the rest.
Just the fact that you *must* watch every episode is the main reason I don't watch 24.
I hate being a slave to the TV, which is why I almost never watch a show "live" (at its broadcast time.)

Never seen it...
I've got the first four seasons on DVD. Will get the 5th season on DVD this fall when it's released. I can't wait for season six to begin in the winter :)

I've watched a couple of seasons on DVD. I think the latest season takes just over 40 minutes for each "hour" (once the commercials are removed).
By the way, does anybody besides me think that they went to great lengths to make the president seem like Richard Nixon?

Conventional E-Bombs do exist, but they have limited radius and effectiveness when compared to the EMP generated by a nuclear detonation. This was discussed in detail in both Popular Mechanics and Popular Science several years ago. I knew about the conventional explosive/stator coil type of bomb, but not the high-power microwave one.
This article may be a bit heavy for non-technical types, but it is a very good overview of EMP weapons even though it is over 10 years old.

I like the show, but still haven't watched "Day 5" yet. The whole season is just sitting there on the PVR...

I seem to remember a story in Wired about there being a test site in one of the desert states (read: Nevada, Utah, New Mexico) that was specifically for these kinds of things.
