View Full Version : contemporary "hip hop" has sunk to a new low...

i was driving home from work today, flipping through the radio stations, when i landed on one of the local "hip hop and r&b" stations. i was completely stupefied by what i heard...

the song's background beat belonged, of course, to that now-popular genre of bass-heavy, i-made-this-in-my-spare-time-with-a-casio-keyboard-and-TR808-drumkit club rap variety, but that wasn't what bothered me (any more than it usually does, anyway). what bothered me were the lyrics.

i must have hit it somewhere in the middle of a chorus, or a refrain, or a bridge, or some such, and i came upon a girl chanting over and over:

"chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side...
chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side...
chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side...
chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side..."

at first, i thought it was a radio ad, some clever parody making fun of the absurd beats/lyrics that permeate typical radio club-rap. but as the song continued on, and as the radio call sign was played over the track, along with an echoed voice telling me who the DJ currently spinning was, i realized this sh*t was for real.

i don't know why, but i was so utterly furious that i wanted to break something. i... i just don't have words to express what i felt.

maybe sadness. i'm so sad, because this is what mainstream america will perceive hip hop to be. chalk another one up for corporate greed...

I really don't understand it. I've seen it done a bunch of times but I don't really get how to do it. There's a bunch of videos on youtube and I still don't get it. It's a Harlem thing.

As far as hip hop goes I'm GLAD to hear this. It's a local dance craze specific to part of the nation. That's hip hop and Harlem at it's best if you ask me.

ahhh, so it's an actual dance..........

okayyyyy..........

well, i'll admit i'm out of the current mainstream hip hop loop, but i don't have any qualms about that.

and as memo suggested, i did a quick search on youtube for it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuoxlAMxjIc

the song playing is the one i heard on the radio. i still think the song is sh*t, and contrary to what memo might think, i'm pretty sure i can do that dance.

in any case, when did rap music become a series of chants and catch phrases repeated over and over again? i know the whole issue of music "evolving" has been tackled several times and by people more qualified, educated, and eloquent than i, but i dunno.

maybe this is a sign of age? bah! i'll take my old school boogie down productions or gang starr over "chicken noodle soup" any day of the week.

EDIT:

ok ok, i can accept that. i get what you're saying, and i agree with the sentiment to some degree. i still think the song is uncreative, unoriginal, uninspiring, and nonsenical. maybe i AM just getting old.

I'll admit the song is pretty bad, but dance songs always are.

2pac & Biggie.
Run DMC & Sugarhill Gang.
Rakim & LL Cool J.

That's what I listen to now, several decades later.

PE and NWA are solid. There are plenty of "old school" artists that I left off:

Gang Starr
Dr. Dre
Ice Cube
Warren G
Tribe
Naughty By Nature

Then there's the few who have gone too mainstream for me, but i loved their original stuff:

Nas
DMX
EPMD
Jay-Z
Mobb Deep

I love how they take the same bass line and just add slightly different lyrics. You hear the same intro but it could be any one of 4 different songs.

One of the San Diego Surf Dawgs has this song as his walk up song. He was THE whitest white man you'd ever want to meet.

So after every single dang game I'd head home singing this darn song.

i'm reminded of this dude named MC Lars. i really can't stand the guy, but he's got this one song called Generic Crunk Rap:

phrase about my gun, rhyme about my loot
phrase about these haters i sometimes have to shoot
rhyme about my clothes, props to my hometown (carmel valley!)
lyrics that say nothing cause that's how we get down
phrase about my clique, don't step to me punk!
Gratuitous rhyme about keeping it crunk
Big ups to our genre; we do it our own way
It's just too bad our songs don't have anything to say!

(chorus)
generic crunk rap! (WHAT!)
generic crunk rap! (YEAH!)
generic crunk rap! (WHAT!)
we don't mess around!

generic crunk rap! (YEAH!)
generic crunk rap! (WHAT!)
generic crunk rap! (YEAH!)
you like our dirty sound!

buy cars! (GET CRUNK!)
take shots! (GET CRUNK!)
have sex! (GET CRUNK!)
spend money! (GET CRUNK!)
buy cars! (GET CRUNK!)
take shots! (GET CRUNK!)
have sex! (GET CRUNK!)
spend money! (GET CRUNK!)

phrase about my car, rhyme about my crew (volvo!)
rap about how much more crunk I am than you
rhyme about my rims, rhyme about my bling
chorus where I scream cause I don't know how to sing
rhyme supporting guns, and also drinking 40's
misogynist rhyme about banging lots of shorties
rhyme about my dough, and then some made up lyrics:
get off the gas you swinga, check the deuce, yo sabirit!

(chorus)

buy clothes! (GET CRUNK!)
hennessy! (GET CRUNK!)
escalades! (GET CRUNK!)
spend money! (GET CRUNK!)

buy cars! (GET CRUNK!)
take shots! (GET CRUNK!)
have sex! (GET CRUNK!)
spend money! (GET CRUNK!)

Grandmaster Flash (i'm sorry but we're killin hip hop)
KRS (i'm sorry but we're killin hip hop)
Run DMC (i'm sorry but we're killin hip hop)
but who can argue with the charts when we're sittin at the top?

Rakim (i'm sorry but we're killin hip hop)
Chuck D (i'm sorry but we're killin hip hop)
De La Soul (i'm sorry but we're killin hip hop)
and we're makin so much money that we ain't about to stop.

etc etc

can't argue with that... :hihi:
