SYDNEY (Reuters) - Steve *****, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, has died in a marine accident off Australia's northeast coast, local media reported on Monday.
Queensland state government sources quoted by Australian Associated Press (AAP) said *****, 44, whose television show "The Crocodile Hunter" won international acclaim and popularized the phrase "Crikey," was believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest.
He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred, the report said.

Wow... never expected him to go out like that, but then again, I remember a few "close shaves" that Marlin Perkins of Wild Kingdom barely survived himself...
At least he did die doing what he loved doing the best... "messin' around with nature" :heh: Talk about a bad break... had that ray stung him elsewhere, he might've lived to see another day.
Sad to see Steve pass on like that... R.I.P. Crocodile Hunter, condolences to your wife and kids.

An interesting quote from Nigel Marvin from this article (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/09/04/entertainment/main1963907.shtml):
"It's just absolutely unbelievable," Nigel Marven, a well-known wildlife specialist who was a longtime friend of *****'s, said on The Early Show. "To be killed by a big crocodile or bitten by a snake, you'd have believed it. But a stingray? There's only been three cases in Australia of deaths by stingrays in the last 100 years. Seventeen worldwide. So it's a tremendous freak accident."These guys take their chances, but this wasn't the way you would have guessed that he might end up going.

Yeah it is a little sad, but at least the dude died doing what he loved. Honestly I’m a little dissapointed that he didn’t get killed by a Croc. I guess the documentary was aptly named.

Ya know, when you play with fire, eventually you're gonna get burnt.

Sort of. This was an accident, it wasn't like he was "playing with fire."

RIP. There are people who think he deserved it because he exploited animals. To those people I say, I hope your dog turns on you one day.

I truly do not believe some of you people. He was a great man doing great work. His love of animals was so great, the last thing he would ever do was hurt an animal. All he wanted to do was make people aware of the animals we might not otherwise see or find out about. His passing is a great tragedy. He could have done so much more with his life.

( Is this person just randomly posting a rant about people on some other board? Because they say "Some of you people" But I don't see a single person in the post saying he was a bad person or doing anything wrong ) Sure one person said he teased them too much, but honestly.. This isn't a place that is bashing him.
