To paraphrase the old Bell helmets ad:
If you have a $19.95 wife, buy $19.95 brake shoes and pads and install them on her car.
Raybestos, NAPA Premium, or ACDelco (all of which are manufactured by Raybestos' parent company) that have D3EA certification are the only aftermarket brake pads and shoes that I'll install.

DłEAź is a testing method which enables brake manufacturers to verify that their products are consistent with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). In other words, it makes sure that your replacement brakes are as good as your original brakes.
Cheap brakes are right up there with cheap sushi - they may seem like a good idea at the time, but they could also kill you before long...

Yeah... I'm in agreement with MM34. Going cheap on your brakes is generally NEVER a good idea. Your life depends on them. :D

I either use OEM brake pads or good aftermarket ones.

What is the difference between cheap and expensive brake pads?

What is the difference between cheap and expensive brake pads?
Stopping and NOT stopping. :D
(j/k.... sorta :D )
Better brake pads can improve various parts of your braking system over "el cheapo" pads. Depending on what the pads are made from, some don't wear out quite as fast, while others give you better stopping power... and others produce less brake dust that really makes your wheels look terrible. Then there is also the "noise" factor that some brakes produce.
Ultimately, cheap brake pads can cause excessive premature wear on the rotors as well.. which ultimately causes a more expensive brake repair in buying new rotors for your vehicle.

According to the page I linked above, one real-world difference is 20 feet of stopping distance at 40 MPH.
"One size fits all" doesn't apply any more when talking about brake friction material in modern cars and trucks. Many aftermarket manufacturers use one low-cost friction compound material for all of their brake shoes and pads.
More vehicle manufacturers are using vehicle or carline-specific friction compounds to address stopping distance, wear life, noise, and dust issues. Anti-lock is another issue, as the ABS system software is programmed for use with original equipment friction material.
Here's more links with more information on the D3EA test process:
