View Full Version : Question regarding RAM and a compaq Pc

Alright, i have a bit of a problem. I am about to purchase two 128mb DIMM's, and i currently have a compaq pent2 350mhz. My roommate claims that ram such as Kingston 128mb 133mhz will not work with my motherboard, since i have a compaq. Can anyone verify this?
My plan was to take out my compaq ram, and install it into my brothers' pc, which has the exact same ram.

I've heard that Compaq stuff is all proprietary, so maybe... can't hurt to try <g>
The one experience I've had with it is a buddy of mine back in college had a Compaq computer with 16 Megs of RAM. He bought another 16, generic stuff. Computer said he had 24 megs of RAM. Put either one in and you would get 16, both in you would get 24. I could put both sticks into my computer, and it would say 32... Weird stuff. I played with some jumper settings but could never get it to work right. Might have been something stupid though, and totally irrelevant to it being a Compaq, but I just hate Compaq's in general, and like to blame everything I can on them... hehe
I guess the big thing is the generic 16MB stick worked by itself, so I think it should work...

Go to http://www.compaq.com, look up your model specs and see. Compaq has been using industry standard components for over 3 years in their desktop PCs (presarios are garbage and you get what you pay for). Of course they RECOMMEND Compaq RAM but that's it...
