View Full Version : The Olympus D-360L or Olympus D-490? Whats better? Also where do i get smart media..
They both look good for a starter camera and for taking indoor and out door pictures. If i get ither one i will most likly get a card reader for them, battery pack and a larger memeroy card. Id juts like the oknow what you guys think fo them both. I do not plan on using the movie mode on the D-490 but if the image quallity is better than the 460L its worth it.
Also where is a good place to get smart media cards from for really cheap? Both these cameras use them and im having a hard time getting a good deal on these memory cards. Thanks.

While I have no experience with either of these cameras, I looked at them while investigating what camera to get for myself... I think cnet has reviews of both, and steves-digicams had a review on the 490. If I remember right, the 360 does not have the same zooming capabilities, its missing digital or manual zoom, thus I rejected it. I think cnet did not have very good reviews of the 490 so I rejected it as well... One of my best friends has the 460 and loves it.
I got the Fuji 1400 since it is comparable to the 460, but I could get it for $166 before the rebate instead of $300 for the olympus...
Smatmedia - haven't had to buy any yet, I got my father-in-law the same fuji so he got me extra smartmedia already... :-)
I'd just go to pricegrabber, smartmedia is listed there and find wheres cheapest.

kfc,
I think we discussed these cameras before-- either that or I read something from zdnet.com about them.
The best place to get the olympus D-360L is Wal-mart. I have heard that it comes with some extras when you get it from there. It isn't advertised, it is the way it is packaged.
Hopefully, I find that under my tree this year ;)
Also, Wal- mart has some good sales on the cards everyonce in a while. I picked up one for my mp3 player.
btw just now i found out about the PhotoPC 800. its a $800 camera for $400 on pricegrabber.com http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?masterid=8815 what do you think of that camera? also do you like the 1400 and is it worth the purchase? or does it just get the job done but you wish it was a little better?
there are no walmarts where i live. i live in southern california and there are none within a days drive.

cnet gives the PhotoPC 800 a rating of 4 out of 10 - YIKES!
I haven't actually got the 1400 yet, ordered it last Wednesday, and it shipped Saturday. I suppose any camera you get you will always want a little better... I read some other people on the boards comments who own and like the 1400, I remember chosenfool in particular.
How I figured out the camera I wanted was I originally decided I wanted an Olympus, so I went through all the CNET ratings on the Olympus cameras, (if you click on any one, you can say 'more from this company' and it shows all the camerase they have reviews on from that company) looked at the price range, and wouldn't look at any camera that rated lower then a 7. Then I read into them and chose the 460 or the 2020. Then I threw that all out then window and got the Fuji. Oh well... hehe.

I own both the Olympus 360 and 490. The 360 is a good low end megapixel camera. It doesn't possess a whole lot of features you'd find in other cameras but what can you expect for a low end model? It does what it does. Takes good pictures. The 490 is the midrange offering by Olympus. It has a 3x zoom, movie mode, and higher resolution(1600x1200). I bought it because there were times I really needed a zoom. The movie mode is kind of neat but I'd prefer a camcorder to do that type of work.
Ask yourself if you need the 3x zoom feature, movie mode, and higher resolution. If you don't really need those functions, save your money and go with the D360 model. Other than that, the D490 gives a lot of bang for the buck.
