Heh.. Northwood core. Cooler than a Prescott... when run at stock speed. :thumb:
I have one of those in my main PC right now. :D

I just planted a big wet one on ya Johnny - I've been looking for one of these for over a year, and came this close --> <-- to buying one for $250 not too long ago. I *did* buy one from Newegg a few months ago, but they shipped a Prescott rather than a Northwood, so I sent it back.
Thanks man! Hope they don't sell out before they ship it... these things are not easy to find.
DF, you must still be using the trusty 'ol 400SC, huh? I still have yet to see a better deal than that was.

I built a computer a few years ago using an Intel 2.4 Ghz 800 MHz CPU. It is used for DVD copying. It isn't hooked into the Internet. I can't believe how fast it boots up. And the spped at which it encodes(decodes?) DVDShrink is amazing.
I can't imagine what it would do with a 3.4 processor!
To me, this is the best bang for the buck right now, if you don't have to multitask.

Nope... I build my own computers.
My main box has a 3.4 Northwood, and my "hand me down" (i.e. DFJ's PC) has a 3.2 Prescott in it. :D

Oh absolutely - I have the same today (the 2.4GHz) paired up with a Raptor 10K RPM drive, and the thing is a screamer, even though the machine is already 3 years old. This processor upgrade should get me at least another year or 2 out of it.

Would this work and boost my Dell 600SC? How would I know if it is worth the upgrade and if it will work. My Dell is 2.4ghz

Depends on the BIOS of that Dell... but honestly, it should work.
Both of those chips are Socket 478 Northwood cores... you just gotta make sure that the Dell has the correct multiplier in the BIOS to give you 3.4 GHz.
I'd recommend looking through the Dell Knowledgebase to confirm the BIOS settings.

Some motherboards will not accept 800 MHz processors. Make sure that yours will.

Sorry man -
According to the service manual (http://support.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe600sc/en/index.htm), it only supports a 400 or 533MHz. If you have a 2.4 today, you have the 533 FSB and most likely the highest you can go is 3.06Ghz.

Thank you for researching it. Like you said, the best is a 3.06 http://www.pricewatch.com/cpu/4981-1.htm

I was afraid of that... pd123 got stuck with an "early version" of the Socket 478 mobos of that time frame.
Oh well sorry bout that pd123...
