Adrian Gonzalez went 4-for-5 to lead the offense as the Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-6, today to clinch the NL West title. The Padres will open the National League Division Series on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals at 1:00 p.m. PT at PETCO Park.

GO PADS!

They are really on a roll these days! September was like their best month ever as a team. The race to take the division was not easy and they have momentum for the playoffs. The same cannot be said for St. Louis so Pads should go past the first round this year.

I can't take any more games like todays. It was almost like Marty
S@ithead was in the dugout calling plays. But they hung on and that all that counts !!

Go Padres

You're mistaken, I did not "forget any other teams". As per my original post/title....my poll is only concerned with the Padres, & their portion of the divisional series:smash:

technically the Padres and the Dodgers are co champions, but because the Padres owned the Dodgers this year they get the homefield advantage.

nothing technical about it. There is no asterisk next to Padres name in listings of division champs. Padres are winners, Dodgers are first losers.

As much as I hate to say it, the cardinals are stone cold right now, and have been much of the second half. Blame injuries if you want, but I don't think they have what it takes to be a champ team.

I'd love to see a stat for all the playoff teams.

Season RBIs vs Season RBIs due to the HR. I have a theory that the teams with higher RBIs to HR RBIs will be more successful in the playoffs, since it may indicate better overall hitting than relying on a select few players to drive in runs on basic pitching mistakes.

NLDS Game 1 - Padres (88 - 74) vs. Cardinals (83 - 78)
Jake Peavy vs. Chris Carpenter

Redemption Song

A rematch of last years NLDS opener in which Jake got rocked for 8 runs in 5 innings, while Carpenter coasted through 6 innings giving up only 3 hits. The Padres lost that game 8 - 5 in route to a 3 game sweep. The biggest question back then wasn't how the Padres could have done so poorly against the 100 win Cardinals team, but rather, what happened to the dominating stuff Peavy was throwing all year? The answer was made clear after the game, and it wasn't a very encouraging one. Jake Peavy pitched with a cracked rib, which not only cost the Padres the first game of the playoffs but ensured he wouldn't be pitching again even if the Padres didn't get swept. Jake broke his rib after celebrating the Padres clinching of the NL West, a celebration of a mediocre 82 - 80 season. The shocking twist of Jake's broken rib helped summarize their disappointing ending to a lackluster divisional race.

Fast forward one year. Jake Peavy, although without the numbers of a year prior, steps onto the mound Tuesday healthy and determined. The fire he feels in his stomach this year doesn't come from a busted rib, but rather the desire to succeed and redeem himself from a year before. Chris Carpenter dominated again this year and is a Cy Young candidate. However his recent start against San Diego shows he is beatable, giving up 6 runs on 12 hits in 7 innings. Jake looks towards Carpenter as not just a formidable opponent, but also an obstacle on his path towards redemption. A path that has taken him almost exactly one year to get to.

Good luck Jake. Go get your redemption song. And lets go Padres.

Peavy had his chance but failed to do it. I hope he gets another chance but at this point, he looks more like a number 2 or 3 starter rather than an ace.

Well, here they are, the Padres, down by 2 games now, going on the road. It really would have helped the Padres if they did not have the lowest batting average at Petco of all the teams that played at Petco this season.
The only hope that we have left is the fact that we play well on the road win the next 2 there and come back home on FIRE.
THERE IS STILL HOPE....I HAVE THE FAITH.!!!

Padres fans don't know how to act at big games. They cheer even when our own guys are up, which to me seems like it is counter- productive. Hopefully they'll be able to get at least 1 in St. Louis.

Now that they are on the road, where they seem to be more comfortable, they have kept the series alive. This is unedited copy from the AP report- note who it says the Padres beat!

ST. LOUIS - The San Diego Padres got the ball to Trevor Hoffman, and baseball's career saves leader did the rest. Chris Young shut down the Cardinals' offense for 6 2-3 innings, Russell Branyan's two-run double gave the NL West champions their first lead of the series and the Padres beat San Diego 3-1 Saturday, pulling to 2-1 in their NL playoff.

I am soooo happy those creeps from
the Bronx have been knocked out, and in the first round
to boot.

Woody on the mound for the Padres tomorow.
We have a pretty good shot at another
win and knot up the series.

GO PADRES

WTF is up with the strike zone tonight? It's all over the place...

I have a feeling one of the sides is going to leave this game pissed off about the zone.

I did NOT expect the cards to win in 4. Wow. My hat's off to the Padres.

I wonder what's going to happen when the cards face the Mets offense...

<shivering as I fondly remember what Beltran did to us 2 years ago in NLCS>

Well it has been a good post season so far... sucks my Dodgers got swept, but atleast the Padres and the Yanks are out too. :) Now the A's need to choke like always and everything is fine :) I didn't see an NL west team moving on as the NL west is weak.
