Does Windows Firewall have settings to prevent a program on your computer from accessing the internet? My Norton lapsed and I was going to try just Windows. I have a program that I purchased and required activation, which I did several years ago, but it was later declared possibly illegal and the company was told to shut it down. (DVD X-Copy).

The first time I tried to use it since the Norton expired, the program gave a pop-up about my possibly having a cracked version of the program that could harm my computer and gave a website. My version is not cracked so I ignored it and launched the program. It took the normal amount of time to read the DVD I was making a personal back-up of (I own the DVD so this is legal) but when it asked for the blank disc to burn, I got an immediate note "burn failled" before it did anything.

Previously when I used this program under Norton, it once asked if I wanted to allow intenet access for it and I chose no and the program worked fine. I think that this time it was able to connect to the internet and that the company did something to disable the software I purchased.

So back to my question- is there any way to block internet access for this (or any other) program)? Searching the internet seemed to say that Windows does not do that.

AFAIK, the XP firewall only blocks inbound access, which is the reason I don't use it. I want something that allows me to control inbound AND outbound traffic. ZoneAlarm lets you control both directions. I'm currently using the firewall that came with my Panda security suite, which also lets me control inbound and outbound.

As I figured. Thanks for the reply!

I use Sygate Personal Firewall (which is free) and allows you to set the criteria for in and outbound traffic per application.

I think that the free Sygate Personal Firewall has been discontinued (thanks to our "friends" at Symantec). You might be able to find an "old" version through some download services, though.

Guess that tells you how old mine is then.
