I don't follow baseball as closely as I once did, but I'd think you'd have to consider the Yankees the favorite at this point. While I'm a believer that pitching and good defense will trump a strong set of bats, the Yankees lineup is just unbelievable. Some many guys, from top to bottom, who can all crush the ball.
Couple that with decent to good pitching, and I'd be surprised if they didn't bring home the hardware this season.

Rogers threw a gem. Yeah, he's 40+ and had that run-in with the camera crew last season...but the guy can still get it done. Last night was a clutch game. No chance Detroit wins the series if they head into Game 4 down 2-1.
Yanks are on the ropes! I wouldn't have a ton of confidence in Wright going today either.

We did the superfan thing on Saturday.
1st up was the USC game and then out to the Dodger stadium to try to get some playoff tickets. 1 friend flaked so my other friend came out to watch sc play very badly. On the way to the Coliseum, we discussed trying to get tickets to the Dodgers and I warned him that it would be crazy, but that I would go if he drove.
After SC's near loss, it took around 1 1/2 hours to get to the ravine due to the traffic (20 minute drive from the coliseum). My friend burnt his clutch out a little while sitting on the hill and the mets were up 3 to nothing before we got into the parking lot. It was the bottom of the 1st when we got into the parking area and we didn't get parking until the top of the 4th. We thought it was too late, couldn't find parking and were thinking of hitting a bar when we got lucky and they started opening up the areas right off the main circle. We found a scalper right away and got decent seats midway between 3rd and home. It was late and we were losing, but it was fun to be at the playoffs. Maddux just didn't have it and the bull pen weren't any better, but 5 runs are usually more than enough for us.... just not that day. Still it was fun watching them almost come back and watching Garciapara pinch with the bases loaded. Everyone was hoping on a miracle and it didn't happen this year. Looking at the numbers, it's hard to believe that the Mets are only paying a little more for their roster.
I think the A's will win out with that 60 million a year roster, but whatever.
Now that this is over, I can concentrate on college football and get ready for the show to do their thing.

The Mets payroll has been Top 5 for quite a while now, if i'm not mistaken. It's taken us a few years to get the right people in and this year is looking promising.
Sure, the Yankees had double the salary, but look at how many championships they've won and how many trips to the world series they've had in the past 10 years. I think it was justified.

This is why baseball has lost its relevance in American society, compared to where it once was. It's a have/have-not sport. Teams can just buy championships...what's to like in that?

Agreed. But history has shown (see Yankees) that it often is about money. How often do the low-rev teams make it as far as the big spenders? That's all I was saying...

It's mostly due to them losing their talent once they reach the apex of success. How many Tigers players are going to stay in the low pay range after being a part of a world series team (provided they make it?)

Meh, I dunno. All they have to do is reload their talent base by dropping a wad of cash on free agents. They don't often lose their talent...and when they do, they just go buy new ones.

This rain out is really going to put the NLCS winner at a disadvantage. Should both series go the full length, the NLCS champ will get 1 less day of rest, and will not have the home advantage on top of it. Whomever the winner is, I hope for their sake it's a short series.

Well it was disheartening to lose by one mistake, but in all honesty we expected to lose versus Glavine, now he has to pitch on short rest.
The Mets Defensive was very sharp, but they didn't test the Cardinals Defensive side. If Carpenter can pitch, and we can hit Maine, we are going home with a split.
If we lose tonight I concede the win to the Mets. I am still going to games 3, 4, 5 to cheer my birds.

Even though I will always root for the National League team in the World Series (I despise the designated hitter compromise, and wonder why if they want to go that route that they don't come up with a "baseball" league that has complete offense and defense like in football), I think that Detroit will be very difficult to beat in this year's series.

That is really sad to read. In LA there were lots of ways to get Dodger tickets for cheap or free when I was a kid. I don't know what they do now, but back then, little league, schools/after school programs, scouts, etc., would get a hold of tickets every so often and we'd catch a game. I think the cheap seats were $10 or less and there would be 2 for 1 coupons every so often or something to make it a better deal.

The Nat'l league plays the game the way it is supposed to be played. Everyone on the field gets to bat. Just like when you're a kid and playing baseball in the park with the boys (and maybe the girls). NL pitchers are more accountable for the way they pitch to the other team since they have to face the opposing pitcher in their own next at bat.

The beauty of a 7 game series. Now the Tigers are facing a must-win!
Yeah, they can fall behind 2-0 and still win the thing. But I wouldn't want to go on the road for potentially 3 games, needing to win at least 2 to stay alive. And, if you don't sweep in STL, you have to win both games 6 and 7.
STL can come out relaxed for Game 2. If they don't win, big deal. They still got the split.
