CompUSA had Office 2003 student edition for $90, is it worth upgrading from Office Professional 97? Also, I read a lot about Openoffice. Is that a perfect upgrade possibility? I don't mind saving the $90 but I would much rather spend $90 than have any aggrivation or just stick with Office97 Professional.

I'm not sure what "Student edition" is. I think 2003 pro is miles better than 2000 pro, so I would imagine there's no comparison for 97'.

However, I don't know what student edition is and how much they've cut out. It also depends on how much you use office, and for what. For general word processing and spreadsheets, save your money. If you're taking an Access database class or finance class that uses excel heavily, I say upgrade.

Student version is exactly the same as retail, except it's only availble for purchase by students or teachers. I say upgrade by all means - 97 and 2003 are a world apart.

Try OpenOffice before you buy anything - it won't cost you anything but a little time.

time = money!!!

hehehe j/k...but seriously

I use office 2k3. I like the interface. I actually don't see the difference between office 2k3 (besides gui) and office 2000. but office 97...hott damn you gotta change that!!!

I'd upgrade, and still d/l OpenOffice. You have to use it for a bit to get used to it...but you may feel comfortable enough with it to where you won't need to upgrade the next time you're in this position.

I think I will take your advice and upgrade my Office 97 and I will also try OpenOffice to get used to it. I am strongly a creature of habbit and don't get used to new things easily.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the other difference between student edition and retail is that if you are using a student edition, you can't upgrade it with the "upgrade version" of a future Office suite.

Certainly could be true - never tried that!
