So I called Staples to pricematch that 40G Maxtor HD for 69(yes I know I'm a few days behind on this one),
and the CSR who answered the phone just kept saying that they were out of stock.
He wouldn't even check my zip code to see if they were, in fact, out of stock.
So, now they are simplying eliminating any good deals as soon as they find them. They won't even give us a chance to rip them off...

Do you blame them?

...I got it, but the CSR said there was only six stores left with them in. I'm betting that they knew when they were completely gone. BTW: They said that (from Maxtor) the drive is a closeout.

Well get this...
I was one of the first people to call in and get it pricematched, and my order was supposed to arrive today. It didn't, so I called in to see what was up. They said they weren't sure if I would even get one. They are sold out all over the country and hadn't been able to locate one for me. So that upset me a little bit. I mean, if I order something, speaking with a live person, and he tells me, yes , we have it, and you will have it on this day, I expect Staples to make good on their part of the transaction. And now they're trying to back out of it? No, I don't think so. And the worst part of the whole thing? You can still order it throuhg the 1-800 number or via the website. They still have it listed as in-stock, available for one-day delivery.
So, I called and asked to speak to a Supervisor. He told me that he would have the manager of the local store call me tomorrow to see if they had located one for me. Then I asked, well, what if they don't? He paused, and didn't respond for a second. I told him what I thought should happen: If they are not able to locate one through their stores, then it is their responsibility to locate one either through another retailer and then provide that item to me at the price agreed upon in the original transaction, or subsitute a higher end model (60 Gig) for the same price. He said that would not be a problem, and to call him tomorrow if the local manager wasn't able to locate one. I suggest the rest of you do the same if you;re order does not come through.

My local Staples has both the 30 GB and 40 GB in stock. And the Maxtor UTA 100 card. But the manager has never been particularly helpful, especially when presented with a price match or online coupon. Anyone have a good strategy for getting the best deal out of this situation? Who has the best price match on the 40 GB now - OD @$119? Dag - where is 69 coming from?
Thanks to all.

The 69 is your total final cost after pricematch and rebate via maxtor for purchasing the drive and card...

...only 36 hours after ordering! I didn't order the ATA100 card because I wasn't sure the drive was ATA/100...it is. And what's more, the drive is 45GB! There's a sticker on the outside that said
"Five Gigs Free...don't you feel special? You don't? Well, you should, you ingrate!"
(maybe it didn't say exactly that, but you get the picture.)
