Red wine might work to protect the brain from damage after a stroke and drinking a couple of glasses a day might provide that protection ahead of time, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday.
In an effort to better understand how red wine works, the scientists from Johns Hopkins University fed mice a moderate dose of a compound found in red grape skins and seeds before inducing stroke-like damage.
They discovered that the animals suffered less brain damage than similarly damaged mice who were not treated with the compound, which is called resveratrol.
I think I'll start to drink wine...

I enjoy wine, but for those who don't want the alcohol, will grape juice work as well?

Grapejuice is probably not a good source since the compound is found in the skin of grapes and the juice is produced without the skins. Darker wines are fermented with the skins to increase the tanins.

The Trader Joe's near me has a "wine guy" giving samples on Thursday through Saturday afternoons. This past Saturday I sampled a Clos du Bois 2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon that was absolutely fantastic. I couldn't resist picking up a bottle for $15 (I'll set it aside for a special meal.) Although most of the wines I pick up are under $10, I'll probably have to grab another bottle or two the next time I'm there.

Depending on the year I guess... I'm seeing the '03's for $12.99.
