Here's one you can use to win a "bar bet". What's the most dangerous occupation in America (as tracked by the U.S. Department of Labor)? Steel worker? Ship builder? Coal miner? No, according to a recent article in the Chicago Sun Times (http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/103096,CST-NWS-disabledex19.article), the most dangerous occupation is:
City of Chicago patronage worker! Yes, the on-the-job injury claims of Chicago city workers exceed every occupation listed by the Department of Labor: 20 out of every 100 workers (as compared to 17 for Iron/foundry workers at the top of the list). Ah, "the city that works" is still working. Mayor Daley's father would be so proud....

They need to look st DC police officers. I was reading an article a while back that said in some precincts they have over 25% of their officers on injury/disability leave.

The Sun Times article said that firemen and policemen were not included in their study, because they had a separate disability system.

Shawn <~~~~ Stealing Houdini's arrow thing to point out that he's glad that he doesn't pay taxes in Chicago, but is sure that his money's being screwed over somewhere else. Oh wait, I'm a grad student, woohoo! I barely pay taxes! Haha.

I'm sure you're right. The article is a little sarcastic in that regard. It did a study comparing a list of 5000+ people on a "clout" list maintained by someone working for Daley and their disability claims and found that 1 out of 5 patronage workers have been "injured" on the job.
It's an interesting read...

H <---reclaiming my arrow thing to point out that I'm REALLY glad that fewer taxes are pumped into Chicago by SL, at least until they change their law that only permits criminals/muggers/robbers/murderers to have guns. ;)
