In anticipation of a new game coming out I did a few standard tasks to my laptop to keep it running smoothly. Ran CCleaner, Spybot etc. I then did a defrag. I left it to run defrag on XP and when I came back to my PC it must of restarted as it was half way through the startup and came to the Windows cannot start Ntfs.sys error message.

I have found a page on the Microsoft support site to solve this, I boot from the XP CD and go into the repair console. I had to leave it for hours before it would bring up the command prompt in the repair console. It was examining IDE 0, I had to leave it for a couple of hours. I then got into the repair console (a DOS like screen) but had no command prompt. I left it for a couple of hours more and the C:\> prompt came up. The first command to do on the Windows site was cd system32. I did this but it did nothing. I left it overnight to see if it would change directory but it was still at the same place.

So basically I'm stuck, does anyone have any suggestions or any idea why it would be taking so long? It's a fairly quick laptop, does it usually take this long when the Ntfs.sys file is corrupt? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry not sure if this is the wrong forum but this place has had a bit of a revamp since I was last here! Could this be the problem > http://www.gotapex.com/technical-support/49188-problem-with-memory-card.html?highlight=ntfs.sys ?

Yeah, disconnect any peripherals you have & try it again just to check.

However, sounds to me like your hard drive is dying. I'd recommend getting some diagnostic tools from your HD manufacturer (should be a free download from their website) to check this.

I can't get into Windows so no chance of downloading anything :dead: There is something in the BIOS that runs some hard disk diagnostics if I remember correctly, worth running this?

Got a buddy with a burner and 'net access?

Many diagnostics there - download the .iso, burn it to CD on another computer, and boot your laptop with it.

I had this problem a long time ago. Try this from the MS KB:
