Some places will offer a 20% discount for using the passport signup. Others will issue you a GC for 20% of your purchase. Still others (and I don't even understand why they're bothering) will give you free shipping.
THe part you're probably after is the URL:
FMI, read the FAQ

Thanks for the info. Not quite sure I understand exactly *why* merchants (and Microsoft, for that matter) are giving discounts... what's in it for them? I guess they can track your purchases and spam you with related offers?

Its just a great portal for the stores because they get the exposure, I mean Microsoft essentially wants to make a one stop place for you to make shopping online easier since Passport has all your information. No spamming is involved, MS doesn't do that typically.

This type of marketing creates tremendous "word of mouth". Just look at how many times the MSN Passport is brought up on this board and then multiply that by all other similar boards.
Also, it creates a large body of data on customer preferences as people tend to have multiple purchases through the Passport. The structure allows Microsoft to sidestep using "marketing" experts who tell them what people want from second hand info and actually allows them to collect data directly from the marketplace.
Essentially Microsoft is buying its marketing data directly from the consumer by offering sufficient incentive for the consumer to give up some degree of anonymity in his/her purchasing activities. Each time you use or coupon or take advantage of a deal, you sell a piece of your privacy.
Remember, there is no such thing as a "free lunch".
