View Full Version : S/NSS - Job Offer

Memo

NSS: I finally got a job offer here in Austin.

S: It pays less than what I'd like to start with. 50K being the median for CS grads and this job paying 45K. Also, offers no 401k matching. Finally, it's a web developer (PHP) position as opposed to the software engineering I would have prefered. It's a small company and the job is not very challenging so I'm afraid of career suicide.

Now, I'm torn because my only other lead right now is a 2nd interview up in Norwalk, Connecticut which I will be flying up for tomorrow morning. The Conn. company is much sweeter and more professional, I think, but my friends ALL live in Austin. The Austin company wants me to get back to them by Monday as well, so I'd have to get an offer from the Connecticut company pretty damn soon in order to turn down the position here. Ah, this is frustrating!

Friends move. I almost did the same thing (take a job locally because my friends were there, even though the job sucked), but I ended up taking a better job elsewhere. Two years later, no friends lived in that town anymore, so I was glad that I didn't take that job.

Excellent advice. Take the job that's best for you. Now if I could just get this one person I work with to move. :heh:

Ya, the friends aren't so much holding me back as much as it's the only offer I actually have. All other interviews have fizzled out and the only one left is the one I'm flying out for tomorrow. The job has several reasons for me not wanting to take it. I just don't want to be left WITHOUT a job.

i've lived overseas and still live a continent away from my close friends (they're in LA and i'm in DC). regardless of the distance, we still remain close friends and i've made new friends out here.

but yeah, i hope the CT place offers you something so you can bargain. good luck!

Woot, just got back from Connecticut. I got the job! And they're offering 63% more than what the offer in Austin would be paying! I know part of that is cost of living but the rents seemed equal to that of Austin rents  Now I must sleep after being stuck in La Guardia for 8 hours....

Congrats! Just keep in mind that the cost of living on the east coast is quite a bit higher than in TX - not just rent, but just about everything else, too. But an additional 63% should cover it pretty nicely.

Ya, I'm trying to find out more information on the cost of living, weekly groceries bills, taxes, rent, stuff like that. We don't have any people from Fairfield county on G|A do we?

I have many friends who do (I went to school in the New England area and have friends from home who went to Fairfield). PM me if you've got some specific questions.

For a good idea on rent, I'd hit craigslist hard and see what you can turn up. If you're in Norwalk, may not be a bad idea to live further up I-95 to lower your cost of living as well as to get the advantage of having reverse traffic.

Congratulations!

:stupid:

Congrats bro. You're buying all night long at next G/A Fairfield meetup.

COL? It's not THAT much higher here on the East Coast. You'll do fine, you already have in landing the gig.
