Lucky Duck! Give us a review!

I pick up ours on Sunday - and it's from Santa so I can't play it until he brings it :(

BUT, the kids go to their dad's on the 18th, so Santa will come early!

I wonder If I can keep it a secret if I hook it up to the bedroom tv? :shifty:

The company I work for is a "licensed Nintendo developer," and they let us buy a couple of systems from them and get them before the launch. So as soon as I stepped foot into the office this morning, it was waiting for me :D

Avlena and I will be playing tonight, and I'll post a review as soon as I can =)

Ok .. so after about 6 hours of playing on the Wii, with the only game that's available to us thus far (Wii Sports), I can say the following:

Go get the Wii. Seriously. Go get it. Avlena and I are both in agreement: That was money WELL spent. VERY well spent.

The Wiimote takes a little getting used to at first, but you pick it up really really quickly. After a while of messing about, navigating through the menus and whatnot was a breeze w/ with the Wiimote. Simple point-and-click, point-and-click. If you've ever used a mouse before, this'll be a snap =)

The Wii itself has a host of really cool features that surprised me. You get to create for yourself a lego-like character (called a Mii) with the usual "Pick nose/eyes/mouth/etc" stuff. Avlena was able to get a really good lookalike for me, and make it very evil-lookin! It's great!

Now, it seems (and this is based on limited Wii-playtime) your "Mii" is more than just an avatar. It maintains your entire profile of the games you played, data from those games, etc. But.. now get this .. this buggar seems to want to travel. You can transfer it into your controller, take your controller to a buddy's house, and bam .. your Mii comes with you, complete with your statistics, attributes, etc. Your Mii is now on buddy's Wii, and when you're not there, your Mii will populate his games. So .. the more Mii's you get, the richer your game play.

Soo yeah .. Mii's travel. They go places. It's bizarre, but insanely cool at the same time.

Other nifty things.. it comes with an SD slot, and Avlena put in her camera's SD thing and we browsed pictures before I could figure out what was going on.

Now, the game that came with the Wii is "WiiSports" and is a blast, though very limited: Boxing, Golf, Tennis, Bowling, and Baseball. It's very simple and easy to pick up, and (imo) is really just a suite of games to get you used to the new controller. Screams of "Tech Demo", yet it's still quite fun :D Especially boxing :) Make sure to get a second controller, it's insane amounts of fun to be swinging around duking it out with your pal :) And holy crap it's a workout!
Don't expect WiiSports to be a blockbuster hit or anything else than a very polished Tech Demo. Just expect to be a good intro to the Wii, and a couple of really good party games, and you're set =) It'll hold us off well enough until we get some more Wii games =)

Uh .. other features, comes with a calendar .. and mail (to send to other Mii's, haven't tried that out yet), and lots of "Channels." The "Mii Channel" is where manage your "Mii Family" (your own Mii's, as well as those you've collected and that have "wandered" into your Wii from other places :gle:). Additionally there are weather and news channels, the "photo channel" (which where we viewed our pics), and so on. It's a pretty clever interface.

So .. that's my initial take on it. A little more than I wanted to write, but I didn't want to leave it "HOLY CRAP THIS IS COOL!!!" either =) So far, both Avlena and I are highly impressed, and we're still discovering what it can do. I'm very interested in seeing where I can take my Mii (literally) and what the Wii can do once I have the wireless connection set up.

Oh yes, one last thing: You -really- want to get a second Wiimote + nunchuck. Total no-brainer on that one..

That is all for now :) I'll post pics and vids later :D

Toys R Us seems to be the best place to get a second Wiimote. At purchase time for me at Target yesterday morning, I recall seeing a stack of Nunchuks but no remotes anywhere to be found - I figured there's no point in getting one unless I had a remote to go with it but I was wrong.

My buddy and I found remotes at the local TRU but have not had luck finding the nunchuks since then. I plan on calling around some stores today to see if they have some but I doubt it. I personally think that the nunchuks are gone because people went into panic mode and started buying stuff that they didn't even need (e.g. the people who don't own a system yet but figured they'd pick up the accessories anyway).

Oh well. At least I have my second remote and getting a nunchuk should be just a matter of a few days/week.

Got mine! I was looking for one all day. I just got one since I don't think we need more than 2 for wii sports or for any game out there.

I got my Wii today too! I got lucky too. I knew all the stores were sold out, but I was hoping that maybe by some freak situation one store would have a couple (Durham is a relatively small town). I went to the Gamestop at 10am (opening) that I got my PS3 and they didn't have any Wiis. However, the guy said they are expecting 3-4 more that day and their UPS delivery was at 11am. So I sat there until the UPS truck came by at 11:30 and got mine. I can't wait to go home and play it.

From what I gather, the graphics hit is worth the fun that can be had and the fact that the games are more well thought out. I keep hearing people say that the PS3 games are just "Eye Candy" with nothing to offer in actual gameplay.

There's a little latch on the top of the unit (if it's standing upright) where you can plug in all four controllers. I haven't tried a NGC game on (yet), so I dunno how well it works.

Sigh. All of the Marketing and "selling out" and Best Buy Holding onto Consoles until Sundays. I might just have to get myself a 360 for christmas. And get a Wii later!

That's not a terrible idea. The 360 does in fact, rock.

However, just hit those stores around lunch time, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when they get shipments. Sooner or later you WILL come across one.

This system is unreal.

Patrick wakes up, eats his waffles, gets dressed and the first thing he asks for (and through out his morning routine) is "Wii??"

He loves the sports. He trains and is rather good at bowling and golf. He likes to box too.

He navigates the system himself- though the menus, picking which Mii he wants to be (we have one for him and the rest of the family including nana and papa) naming them as he points to them.

It's scary that THIS is what he is playing as a two year old boy. What will be out when he is 10?

i doubt that'll happen anytime soon. at the present, you'll just have to stick with skins... i'm looking up some of them on ebay myself. there's one guy selling BOTH nunchuck and wiimote silicone skins.

you can get covers for the 'chuks? That's awesome, because you play enough zelda, and you can barely hold onto the thing if you are a sweaty italian man.

I've been told that once the tax return comes that we'd set aside money for the Wii. I can't friggin' wait! Hopefully by March-ish there will be some good bundle packs out.

Anybody else have trouble connecting with the built in wifi? I keep getting error 51330 and 51331, which from what I can tell are related to WEP, yet I'm doing everything correctly.

Until I figure this out I'm taking advantage of my neighbors unsecured wireless.

We had that issue too.

Donnie had the wrong login/password and make sure the security settings are correct.

i got that error for the first time last night. all i had to do was change the frequency of my wireless router (linksys) and it worked fine after that.

check out this article... http://www.wiiregamers.com/rumors/4996

edit: oh wait, i realized you're getting different errors than me. well, i hope you're able to fix it...

I haven't had any problems whatsoever with my WPA2 setup. I'll try switching to WEP this weekend to see if I can replicate the problems you guys are having.

What routers do y'all use?

Woo hoo! Christmas has come early to yippie! Of course, I didn't have to wait in line or anything and it took an extra week, but here we are! (http://tenton.org/images/wiizelda.jpg)

Now let's just figure out how to connect it to the jungle of cables that are already connected to the TV/Cablebox and we'll take it from there!

Very nice Yippie! I don't know if it's just me, but I got my Wii this past Sunday and played for about an hour and a half. On Monday, my right side of my body was completely sore from playing Wii bowling. Am I doing this wrong or something? I'm not familiar enough with how much power and how much turning my wrist(spin) is necessary. Maybe I'm just this out of shape.

Anyhow, congrats and let me know how Zelda is. I'm contemplating getting them. I saw like 15 sitting in CC the other day.

My friend at UCLA Engineering Grad School said their engineering school lounge has a Wii and they play in between classes and such. He said he got sore after playing with his classmates, but when I play I never get sore...and I know i'm out of shape.

I have mastered the art of bowling while lying down since it's all about the motion of the remote. I can spin the ball and do all that jazz, but the most difficult motion is the faster swing motion while sitting or lying down. haha.

i'm so lazy!

That's so funny. But you know, I bowl in real life every other week and am never sore. The weirdest muscles are getting sore for me, especially my lats, deltoids, triceps, and the outside portion of my pecs (all these on the right side). Yeah, I've tried the laying down thing, but I'm never consistent. I do much better standing up. I'm taking a break until I recover. Haha

Hey I just got back from Circuit City and THEY HAVE CONTROLLERS IN STOCK!!! You guys should check the ones around you. You can see their inventory online and should probably give them a call before making a trip over there. I just got back 5 mins ago, and they had a box of remotes left, but no nunchuks.

At least I can play SOME 4 player games now!

Does the controllers come with Wii play? I keep reading that controllers are suppose to come out with Wii play in Japan, Australia and North America. If not, are the suppose to come out with Wii play in the future? If this is the case, i may wait before buying a remote. Thanks for the info Brian

Each package only had the Wii remote and 2 batteries, so I guess it didn't come with Wii play. I just checked Wikipedia and it says Wii play is coming out January 15, 2007 in North America. Already came out everywhere else though. Doh! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Play

I was getting tired of just being able to play against the computer so I guess this is ok. At least my friends can actually play instead of just watching now.

By the way, I picked up Zelda from Target 2 days ago. They had a good 2 racks full of them. I thought people would be fighting over them, but no one even cared. If you need Zelda, maybe your local Target would have them in stock too. Not trying to start a fight or anything, but I feel like this Zelda is way too slow! I was falling asleep trying to gather those monkeys out of the temple yesterday.

I have to say, I'm with the rest of the ppl that have a wii, the graphics are still GC in quality, but the claim to fame is the control system. It's definitely something that makes the games more fun! Zelda is great, then again, I've enjoyed playing all variants of Zelda... just need to share my Mii info to say hello to all my G|A people.

I got my Wii this past Sunday and haven't played Monday-today because I've been sore. Yes, I know that sounds pretty pathetic, but it's the dang Wii bowling I tell you! I need a less active game like Zelda!

BTW, Buy.com has preorders for the Wiimote & Wii Play for 49.99. You CANNOT use google checkout with this because it is a preorder.

I'm waiting for Zelda to become in stock at either ToysRUs.com, Buy.com, or RitzCamera.com so I can use google checkout.

Bowling and baseball are both brutal on your arms.

I *know* you really don't have to put that much effort into the movements, but somehow I always do. :P
