So I have both and yes I opened both and didn't sell either.
I have Wii Sports and Zelda for Wii and NBA 2k7 for PS3.
Initial observations - Wii Sports is freaking awesome. It's an amazing sensation to swing the remote and actually hit a ball onscreen. Haven't played Zelda yet, that's today. But the console is well built and well designed. Great console
PS3? I only got NBA 2K7 since none of the games interest me. I don't have an HDTV but I have a Dell widescreen LCD with hookups. However, I only used an S-video cable and the resolution SUCKED! I'm going to buy an HDMI and HDMI to DVI converter and see how it looks. Why doesn't Sony release a VGA cable for playstations??
Anyway, you got a question about either? Ask away.

Sorry...had to make my last post brief since I had class.
more observations:
Like I said earlier, the Wii is well built. Nintendo has hidden most of the ports with covers so it looks sleek when they're not used. It includes 4 gamecube ports and a gamecube memory slot along the top. On the side, it has a SD card reader. It's really light and it feels great. I'm also beginning to understand why it's called Wii. You create a persona (complete with cartoonish face and body) called Mii which can travel with your wiiremote that you can bring to your friend's house. There, your Mii can reside on their Wii. it's kinda cute and has lots of opportunity for expansion.
Meanwhile, the PS3 is freaking heavy. I think it's larger than my original XBox. Still for its size it's quite beautiful in design, although I figure it's a situation where you either hate it or love it. The menu system is very functional although far more complicated than anything I've seen. The big issue I have thus far is that there's no easy way to get to the dashboard like the Xbox 360 does. Rather, you have to eject the game disc before you get to the dashboard. The SIXAXIS controller is also weird. It feels a little too light and the R2/L2 buttons have become half triggers which feel weird. Strangely, overall the PS3 doesn't feel as polished as the 360 or Wii does.

Consider buying an HDMI to DVI cable. I heard bad things about the converters. It's probably caused by bald solder or something.

I'm thinking about getting a HDMI cable then get a HDMI to DVI converter that Monster Cable has. The idea is that I might use that HDMI cable for other things when I get my HDTV later.

How's the hand strap? I've read two reports where the lanyward broke and was sent flying and destroying two TV's in the process.
I'm considering a DS Lite for the wife or just the Wii. Then again a DVD capable Wii is due next year. I got a GC to Toys'R'us for 150 so that's why I'm contemplating one or the other.

I'm not sure how I'd end up throwing the wiimote. The strap seems to just be there to slow it down if you do throw it.

Okay but if you see blockyness or other weirdities, consider that as a possible cause.

my question is: why would you swing your wiimote by the lanyard? as far as i know, there's no game that requires that.

I broke the glass door to my toaster home because I had no place to wear the Wiimote strap as I was attempting to beat Sourdough in a game of Wii Tennis. It's going to be a cold Thanksgiving for Bagel.

ok...well I discovered another issue. Turns out that the PS3 hates anything not HDCP compatible. Even though games don't use HDCP, it won't sync with the HDMI cable.
Sigh...POS...I'm going to return all of these cables and get a component, then feed that through a VGA adapter.

I *love* the Wii Interface, btw. It feels much less like a "dashboard" or a "shell" or whatever you want to call it .. and much more like a (well-thought out) application, that just happens to run games. The currently inserted game is just one of the many "channels" available (not sure yet how to expand said channels yet), so it's stupidly easy to go from game, to "shopping", to news, to weather, to your Miis, etc etc.
This compared to every other console shell that just seemed like that one last, obnoxious thing that's between you and your game. Kinda like pantyhose ;)

So it sound like Wii is the way to go, especially with the price being below the others

If you buy a game online, it appears as a channel. I bought Zelda 1 and it's its own channel.

How many "points" is it for a game as old as Zelda 1? I think it's a good idea to have them, but I sure hope they are atleast reasonably priced :)

If I remember right, it's basically:
NES --> $5
SNES --> $8
N64 --> $8
Genisis -->$8
Something like that.
