Wooo woo!! Lucky! Snow is predicted to return to Buffalo in the next couple days, I'm looking forward to it.
I never pictured Kansas as having trees, lol.

We had been hitting around 60 for the past week or so in the Chicago area. But today is much colder - down to the upper 20s now. Snow is supposed to start later tonight and continue until about noon tomorrow. Total accumulation is predicted to be from 6 to 12 inches.
Tomorrow morning's commute is going to be real fun.... :dead:

Hmmm. I thought snow was something you drove a few hours to go and ski in. Do people actually live in that stuff??? :winkie:

Do you guys get to miss work when it's below a certain temp? Or is that only in the movies/

I've heard of one case when the temperatures were dangerously low that people were told to stay home from work. A few times when snow is especially bad the same thing happens.

I think it depends on wether the area is used to it or not. When my dad was working in Kentucky they got about an inch of snow once and everything shut down for days. They'd start cancelling stuff if there was even a chance of snow.
Here in upstate NY though? About the only thing that closes are the schools if the roads aren't cleaned up by the time the busses need to start rolling in the morning. "Snow Days" happen maybe 6 or 8 times per winter, though anytime there's more than an inch or so all the kids turn on the radio or TV first thing in the morning in case the school districts start announcing closings. Most other stuff only closes very very rarely, like in the case of the Oct 13th storm (~6 weeks ago), where the whole country hears about it. Maybe once every few years.
Closings here are caused mostly by snow, not cold temps. Once in a while the schools will close due to cold, like maybe below -20F or -40F windchills. And in those instances it's mostly just the city schools that have a lot of kids who walk to school. The bus-riding kids elsewhere don't get that break.
So to answer your question- schools close occasionally due to snow and once in a great while due to cold temps. Unless you work at a school, you're stuck going to work.
It might be different elsewhere though. :D

Do you SoCal/ Florida people get to miss work when the weather's just too damn nice to go to work?
Or is that what the term "hookey" is for? :heh:

It's cold (CA standard) here in SoCal for the last 2 days also. :D

If the roads become unpassable things may shut down until they can be cleared or if the storm knocks out power via falling ice/ snow laden trees.
I grew up in Colorado and laugh at what SoCal people call cold. Cold here is when you don't feel like wearing your shorts. I don't even use heating out here. A rainstorm sends drivers into a panic because they do not know to slow down while driving on it. In college, I used to ride my bike or walk the two miles each way- snow or sun. Usually in January it would stay below zero for about a week (even the high was below zero) and I still walked (snow was too deep although I did sometimes ride in the snow). Just put on more socks and pants and wear a scarf across your face. It would get ice on it from my breath on those days.
I noticed some of Florida had a few snowflakes last week (none that stuck to the ground). It has not snowed in San Diego in modern history. Probably had some during the ice age though. The record low is 32 degrees which has happened five times.

You're right zippyJ San Diegan's and other So Cal'ers don't know how to drive in the rain. I always joke that as soon as the first drop hits the freeway, 10 cars crash simulatenously. People think that as long as you drive in the tire tracks of the car ahead of you, you can drive the same(speeding) as when it isn't raining. I ask them "what if you have to brake all of a sudden?" That's usually when they get a glazed looked over their eyes, realizing they have been gambling with their own and their families lives for years ;)

It's morbidly warm here in the Northeast. It was in the 60's today, and I didn't need a jacket. That's crazy! I don't think we've even had a frost yet in NYC! Its been like this the past couple years now. It was never like this when I was young. The winter coats would have been an everyday thing weeks ago :( .

It's been varying here for a few weeks now. 70s-80s one day, then 40s tonight, etc. Rinse and repeat. Usually doesn't get consistently cold (freezing or below) for a few more weeks, and even then we get warm snaps from time to time.
What really surprised me is how chilly it was in San Diego last late March/early April. I was visiting a buddy who's a doc at Pendleton as well as a couple of venues to help out HA for NOLA fundraising and hobnob with some celebs. Even rented a new Mustang convertible for the nice scenic trips, some power (unnecessary on trips to L.A. I learned, etc). But it was too damn cold to keep the top down. Live and learn.

Well, my kids' schools are closed today, but I'm at work as usual. :( We probably had about 6 inches of snow so far, but it is expected to keep falling through the morning (perhaps 4 more inches or so).

While it is certainly true that a wet road will require longer stopping distances, driving in the tracks of the cars before you does have a value by reducing the chances of hydroplaning. (Of course, hydroplaning is a much greater risk when you are driving at higher speeds.)

What is it with my house and storms? The ice we got today (all day) is having fun weighing down my trees.
My sister called this morning. She said her neighbor's tree fell between their houses because of the weight from the ice. Her truck was all frozen - she had to crawl in through the hatch in the back - would have loved to see that.
It's cold here, 34 when Audie got on the bus this morning right before 6AM. But it does warm up into the 40s.

I heard that there are 300,000+ without power in St. Louis due to the ice.

Wow! I hope they can get things up and running before long. I remember a few years back when Omaha got hit by a major ice storm (I know a number of people there). Some people were without power for 10-14 days.

Sounds like Buffalo for the second half of this past October, 'cept it was cauased by 22" of snow falling on trees that hadn't lost their leaves yet!

I'm glad that there are no telephone, electric, or cable lines to get knocked down in my neighborhood. (They're all underground.)

We will at least have sunny days for a while to give the guys a chance to get out there and clean up the lines.
And now I can at least stick my food outside so it won't spoil.

Christmas of 2004 My whole family was without power it almost ruined Christmas as there was no place to have it, due to a large ice strom that took out numerous trees and power lines. I wouldn't even get my car out of the parking lot, adn Mind you I was 9 months pregnant during all this. my parents and 2 brothers stayed in their house the whole time they said it was about 45 degrees in the room with the fire place. I love snow, but I won't drive in it (Yes I can conpentantly do so, just chose not to take the risk with so many who don't know how to drive) I am also always worried that the power will go out. So I kinda hope it only lightly snows.

My power came back on yesterday around 3, so it was out for 13 hrs. Not bad considering the amount of damage this storm put out.
Now I have to go pick up a buttload of 20 ft branches out of the back.
