Local look: Neighborhood fearful after duckling slaughter
"At first I was stunned I sat down and I couldn't believe what I was seeing," Tom Breitsprecher says. "Whoever did it kind of stomped on them with their foot and pushed them to break their rib cage whatever."
A resident of the Tampa Bay area, Breitsprecher was raising 10 ducklings in a homemade pen outside his house, WTSP and today's St. Petersburg Times report. The ducklings were going to live in a nearby pond, but Breitsprecher found them stomped to death nearly a month ago. In a recent video report, Breitsprecher tells WTSP he believes four ducklings escaped the pen during the attack but were caught in the yard and stomped to death there. The Tampa Tribune has more details in its initial report on the deaths.
Neighbors are now fearful of a violent sociopath among them, the Times says this morning. "Margaret Patterson grabs scissors when a visitor approaches her garage. Marival Quesada edges from behind her front door and a barking Doberman. Some people in Providence Lakes won't even answer when a stranger knocks.
Local police say they have few leads and tell WTVT they have never seen an animal cruelty case like this one. Neighborhors and local groups are offering a reward for information in the case.
