What does this William Blake quote mean to you? No, this isn't for a school assignment. It's making my mind wander and I thought I would share.

"The eagle never lost so much time, as when he submitted to learn of the crow."

To me, it says that the eagle represents a person soaring off into knowledge, power, wealth, etc through working hard. The crow represents scum, lazyness, the easy way out. With that said, the quote basically means to me that you'll lose more time trying to find the easy way out of things.

I'd say it means that there's virtue in being humble. The hardships of the poor and less fortunate are not well understood by those of higher socioeconomic status. If society's elite were to step down from their lofty perch to mingle with the commonfolk, they'd be in for a shock and would have a lot to learn.

It reminds me of this passage:

Men at ease have contempt for misfortune
as the fate of those whose feet are slipping.

--Job 12:5

It means those who are great or destined for greatness waste their time serving under those who are mediocre.

Definitely one for the boss.

It reminds me of this passage:

Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals."

--I Cor. 15:33 (NAS)

To me, it means "don't waste your time being someone you're not" and/or "be true to yourself"

Interesting how everyone interprets it differently

can we judge ourselves in sober enough spirit to be able to see that we can't be the eagle in everything we do?

humility within strength and confidence...

Never try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig.
